Alvito is a typical, sleepy Alentejo town on a low hill above the Odivelas River. Noted for its fortresslike 13th-century parish church, the town also has a 15th-century castle converted into a pousada and a number of modest houses with graceful Manueline doorways and windows. The castle was built in 1482 by the Baron of Alvito, the first individual permitted to have his own castle. King Manuel I was born and died here.
