Estremadura has plenty of good-quality lodgings, especially along the coast; the Ribatejo is less well endowed. In summer, you need reservations. Most establishments offer substantial off-season discounts. Accommodations are classed as hotels if they have the requisite facilities, or as alojamento local (local lodging) if they are more basic. In this region, only the towns of Óbidos and Ourém can boast pousadas—formerly state-run, now privately run inns in historical buildings. Reserving well in advance is essential for these accommodations. There are also a number of high-quality, government-approved private guesthouses. Look for signs reading "Turismo Rural" or "Turismo de Habitação."
