Lodz

Łódź (pronounced roughly as "wooch" or "woodge") is a relatively young city, which has grown up quickly in the last 200 years—from a small village to one of the largest cities in the country. Its development was the direct result of the textile industry boom in the 19th century, hence its nickname "the Polish Manchester." Łódź has also been dubbed "the Polish Hollywood"—or "Holly-Łódź"—as it is the location of the famous Polish film school that educated Andrzej Wajda, Roman Polański, and Krzysztof Kieślowski.
