Andel's by Vienna House Łódź

$$ | Ogrodowa 17, 91-065, Poland Fodor's Choice
Andel's, a chic, sylish choice with magnificent, post-industrial interiors, is in a former textile factory filled with artworks and colorful designer furniture. The historic space has been restored with great care, but this doesn't mean that the architects (Jestico + Whiles of London) compromised on quality or comfort. The rooms are pretty and comfortable, and the suites are even better. The hotel's restaurant and bar match classy interiors with great food and polite, efficient service. The hotel offers seven conference rooms, a ballroom for 800 people, and its pride: a glazed swimming pool in the upper floor, overlooking the city. Andel's is the hotel of choice for many visiting stars, having housed both Leonard Cohen and Justin Bieber.

Grand Hotel

$ | Piotrkowska 72, Lódz, 90-102, Poland

Perhaps the most historical hotel in Łódź, the 120-year-old Grand remembers Artur Rubinstein and a host of famous film directors and actors. Today this grandfather of a hotel is a little faded, but perfectly pleasant. The new owners, the Likus hotel group, have refreshed it a little and are planning a complete renovation and upgrade in a not-so-distant future. Until then, it certainly remains a value-for-money option, right in the middle of the city's most fashionable street, Piotrkowska.

Pros

  • Excellent location
  • Historical flavor at a bargain price

Cons

  • Not really so grand as the name would suggest
  • Rooms need an upgrade

Hotel Tobaco

$ | Kopernika 64, 90-553, Poland Fodor's Choice
This boutique hotel in a historic cigarette factory is the top hotel in Łódź, offering far more than it's official three-star designation might suggest. The stylish, modern rooms and public spaces are very well designed, both aesthetically and practically, always keeping the needs of guests in the forefront. Despite its historic origins, this is a nonsmoking hotel, though its history is suggested through fragments of lovely red-brick walls, old ads, and other memorabilia found during the renovation. The hotel's well-regarded, popular restaurant serves scrumptious breakfast in the morning (included in the rates), as well as great à la carte meals for both hotel guests and locals alike. But the biggest treasure of this hotel is its staff, always helpful and polite in a very natural, easygoing way, who seem to love their work at Tobaco.

Pros

  • Excellent, friendly service
  • Great value for your money

Cons

  • Very popular, so it is often booked up

Uroczysko Zaborek

$ | Kolonia 28, 21-505, Poland Fodor's Choice
Local owners have saved about a dozen heritage wooden buildings from oblivion by turning them into this unique hotel. In a vast area of woodland, fields and meadows, they gathered buildings, including a historic parsonage (c. 1880), a farmer's cottage, a windmill, and even an old church. All these were bought or salvaged in neighbouring villages, reassembled in the new location, and turned into cozy residential quarters, with plenty of space between them. Guest rooms, complete with en suite bathrooms, have all the basic comforts and more than a great deal of charm, but they are all different. In warm and spacious common areas—and in the summer, also in the conservatory—simple yet delicious meals are served, based on local ingredients. Hiking paths start at the doorstep, and the hosts have devised nature trails, games, and other activities for both children and adults.

Pros

  • Unique charm of living in authentic, historic buildings
  • All rooms have a private en suite bath

Cons

  • "irregularities" to be expected in old wooden houses

Zamek Biskupi Janów Podlaski

$ | Zamkowa 1, 21-505, Poland Fodor's Choice
Built on the ruins of a 15th-century castle, this historic structure was saved by the Arche Hotel Group, who have turned it into an isolated luxury retreat with great care and at great expense. With the assistance of professional conservators, some historic structures were repurposed with the addition of modern comforts, while other parts of the property were built from scratch. Rooms differ from one another, but they are all stylishly striking. In some suites, you will find vaulted ceilings, in others, freestanding bathtubs on lions' paws. "Bbasic" rooms also have nice touches: here a fragment of an old wooden bookcase, there a beautiful, designer light fixture. The new section, which is connected to the main castle with an underground passage, contains bright rooms in Scandi style, with extra common space including a kitchenette, a comfortable option for families or groups of friends. The restaurant will tickle your taste buds with top-notch international dishes and creative variations of the local classics. An extensive spa and wellness complex includes a pool, saunas, and beauty institute certified by Dr. Irena Eris. Other amenities include state-of-the-art conference rooms and facilities, three bars, and a playroom for children. The hospitable and enthusiastic reception staff are ready to help you arrange local sightseeing and outdoor activities.
