Karl Johans gt. 31, Oslo, 0159, Norway
This very central hotel is the choice of visiting heads of state, rock musicians and Nobel Peace Prize winners. Ibsen used to come twice a day to Grand Café, to read newspapers and have a tankard of beer. Munch was also a regular guest. You can see both with their contemporaries (known as the Christiania Bohemians) in Per Krohg's painting on the far wall of the café. Norwegians book several years in advance for National Day, May 17, in order to have a room overlooking the parades below.
