13 Best Hotels in Amsterdam, Netherlands

Background Illustration for Hotels

The biggest choice you'll make when deciding where to stay in Amsterdam is whether you want a hotel dripping with antique charm and old-fashioned character, or one with an ultramodern, design-focused vibe. Or perhaps a bit of both: many wonderful, historical buildings house übercontemporary hotels.

Accommodations throughout the city are egalitarian, insofar as—no matter the budget—easy access to attractions and idyllic canal views are available to all, from grand hotels to family-run bed-and-breakfasts.

On the high end, Amsterdam's crème de la crème deluxe hotels demonstrate how historical, monumental buildings can be modernized and transformed into state-of-the-art facilities with amenities that often include luxe spas and top-notch restaurants. Mid-range hotels are often found around the Museum District and Vondelpark, and include comfortable rooms and such desirable touches as private, guest-only gardens. On the budget end of the scale, visitors have their pick from inexpensive, cheerful properties offering a more personal touch, and a new batch of hip yet affordable spaces with see-and-be-seen bars.

In fact, Amsterdam accommodations at all price levels are on a design kick, proudly displaying contemporary paintings and sculptures from Dutch artists throughout their public spaces and guest rooms. You may also choose to skip the ubiquitous (though undeniably lovely) canal-house-turned-hotel in favor of the former newspaper plant, diamond factory, tram storage shed, music conservatory, or even construction crane, all transformed into interesting places to lay your head.

When it comes to hotels, some visitors will choose the latest design hot spot, others will always opt for lodgings in an archetypal canal-house hotel. If you're one of the latter, just remember to keep a steady eye (and hand) out when navigating those traditional Dutch staircases. If you're not nimble-footed, find out in advance if your hotel has stairs—how many, what type, and the degree of incline.

CitizenM, The Pijp
citizenM Hotels

Design-savvy travelers on a budget will enjoy the cosmopolitan vibe, lavish public spaces, and airy guest rooms with their high-tech gadgetry (most things in the rooms are controlled by an iPad), but not everyone will love the sci-fi-like see-through glass tubes that contain the toilet and shower. Tucked away near the financial district, this link in a quickly expanding Dutch chain is popular with suited business types as well as a mix of young and older international guests who mingle informally at the canteenM bar and in the lounges broken down into living room–like compartments. Less social types can also hang out in their rooms enjoying AirPlay or Chromecast casting through their widescreen Smart TVs. There are two other CitizenM hotels in Amsterdam; one is a short walk from Schiphol Airport and the other is centrally located near the River Amstel.

Pros

  • Luxurious furnishings surpass the price tag
  • King-size beds and nice ambient lighting
  • Food and drinks available 24/7 at canteenM

Cons

  • Some say guest rooms resemble hospital rooms
  • Out-of-the-way location for nonbusiness travelers
  • No gym

The Albus

$$ | Vijzelstraat 49, 1017 HE, Netherlands

Behind a re-creation of a vintage Amsterdam exterior are seven floors of rooms with all the mod cons and hallways lined with brightly colored contemporary art. Small windows and a color scheme heavy on brown, black, and purple mean that many rooms feel dark. Still, even though the decor won’t be to everyone’s taste, at least they’ve tried to veer away from the usual safe corporate blandness. On the plus side, the beds are supercomfy, with great cushions and Egyptian cotton bed linens.

Pros

  • Claims to be “the first hotel in Europe that’s completely CO2 free”
  • Recently renovated bathrooms are well designed, with a fresh, contemporary feel
  • All rooms are equipped with Nespresso machines

Cons

  • Smallish, darkish rooms
  • On a busy, unattractive street
  • Only the three suites come with a bath

Bilderberg Garden Hotel

$$ | Dijsselhofplantsoen 7, 1077 BJ, Netherlands

This bulky, modern hotel, with spacious (though slightly dated) rooms looms over a tree-lined street within walking distance of the upscale boutiques on Cornelis Schuytstraat, the Royal Concertgebouw concert hall, Big Three museums, and Vondelpark. Adjoining rooms, family suites, and free baby beds make this a good choice for families.

Pros

  • Large, comfortable rooms
  • Good breakfast (not included)
  • Away from the crowds, with good access to public transport

Cons

  • Mostly business clientele
  • Rooms near the lobby can be noisy
  • No fitness center

Named for the leafy residential street on which it's located, a stone's throw from the Leidseplein, Vondelpark, luxe shopping areas, and major museums, this is a good choice for travelers who want to be near everything but not in the midst of the madness. Hotel The Exchange

$$ | Damrak 50, Amsterdam, 1012 LL, Netherlands

Opposite Amsterdam’s monumental former commodity exchange, close to Centraal Station, three adjoining buildings offer one- to five-star guest rooms designed by students and alumni of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute to “look like models hot off the catwalk.” Views and amenities vary considerably, from lower-price interior-view rooms to bright, spacious units with terraces, but all are unique and funky, with a creative use of specially woven fabrics. The walls of the Eighties Room, for example, are covered with a giant 1980s-style "skirt" and "sweater"; to open the curtains, you zip the sweater upward. Also on the premises is BAR STOCK, known for its all-day breakfast.

Pros

  • Fun fashionable atmosphere whether your budget is XS or XL
  • Central location for shopping, sightseeing, and public transport
  • Nice in-house restaurant for coffee, breakfast or lunch (not included)

Cons

  • Design comes before comfort
  • Basic bathrooms
  • Street noise in some rooms

Imperial

$$ | Thorbeckeplein 9, Amsterdam, 1017 CS, Netherlands

Individually decorated (though dated) rooms, a cobblestone street out front, and a busy adjoining square all lend a Parisian flair to this cheap and cheerful little getaway close to Rembrandtplein. There is no elevator, although the stairs are modern and easier to navigate than the steep staircases in many Amsterdam hotels. The hotel is located on a square with lots of late-night bars and restaurants; request a room toward the back if you're a light sleeper.

Pros

  • Family-run hotel with efficient, pleasant staff
  • You couldn't be more central
  • Close to lots of public transport

Cons

  • Noise spills out from local bars
  • Rooms are up two flights of stairs, no elevator
  • Better options available in the area for the same or (considerably) less

Jupiter

$$ | 2e Helmersstraat 14, Amsterdam, 1054CJ, Netherlands

Convenient, no-nonsense, and with few amenities (elevator, breakfast), this well-known budget choice has another great thing going for it: low rates—especially if you're willing to share a bathroom. Although guests have complained about the sometimes-surly staff, you're here for the location: near Leidseplein and a short walk to Vondelpark and the museums.

Pros

  • Quiet yet convenient area near Vondelpark and Leidseplein
  • Elevator
  • Good complimentary breakfast

Cons

  • No particular Dutch flavor

Max Brown Hotel

$$ | Herengracht 13--19, 1015 BA, Netherlands
At this urban hotel, spread across three historic houses with lovely views onto the Herengracht, the check-in desk is a long bar, which sets the tone of the place—casual, hip, and quirky. The small lobby invites lounging, with brown leather couches, velvet chairs, a fireplace, and a small library of art books. Rooms have a clean look and vintage flair with wood walls and patchwork bedspreads, though generally small and sparsely decorated; many contain wet rooms where the shower is not enclosed, but (pricier) rooms with separate showers are available. If you want a full-service hotel, or an elevator, look elsewhere, as there's no restaurant (a basic, complimentary breakfast is served in the small breakfast room), no gym, and only steep stairs to reach the rooms. But if you want to hang at the bar and chat with friendly bartenders and other guests, this might be your place.

Pros

  • A good value stay in the Canal District (including free breakfast)
  • Casual fun vibe
  • Some rooms have canal views or their own street entrance

Cons

  • Steep stairs and no elevator
  • Not a full-service hotel (no restaurant, no room service, no gym)
  • Thin walls mean noise travels

These uniquely styled guest rooms—meticulously decorated with marquetry antiques, Persian rugs, and handcrafted Art Deco furnishings—overlook one of Amsterdam's famous sights, a lineup of seven consecutive bridges across the Reguliersgracht. The proud owners of the 18th-century house scout the antiques stores and auction houses for furnishings, and all have thorough documentation. Top-floor, beam-ceilinged rooms are the smallest and are priced accordingly; by contrast first-floor Room No. 5 is practically palatial, with its own private terrace.

  • Old-fashioned hospitality
  • Iconic canal views
  • Large rooms with antique furniture

Cons
