In Luxembourg City

‘Pétrusse Express' minitrain tours. From March through mid-November, guided ‘Pétrusse Express' minitrain tours of the Old Town and the Pétrusse valley start from Place de la Constitution. 2362–6378; www.sightseeing.lu. €8.50.

hop-on hop-off open-top bus tour. A hop-on hop-off open-top bus tour is available from March through October daily and at weekends through the rest of the year. Tickets are valid for 24 hours. 2362–6378; www.sightseeing.lu. €14.

Vauban Walk. The Vauban Walk is a self-guided military history tour starting at the Bock that leads through the Pfaffenthal to Les Trois Glands (the Three Acorns), 18th-century Austrian fortifications.

Wenzel Walk. The Wenzel Walk allows visitors to experience 1,000 years of history in 100 minutes, though you are well advised to take your time. It is named for Wenceslas II, Duke of Luxembourg and Holy Roman Emperor (no relation to the "good king" of the Christmas carol), who played an important part in fortifying the city. The walk starts at the Bock and leads down into the valley, over medieval bridges, through ancient gates, and past ancient ruins and exact reconstructions (always labeled as such). Two audiovisual presentations are included along the way. The walk also takes in French military architecture of the 17th century and a stroll along the Alzette River, which played an important role in the city's defense system. Good walking shoes and a reasonably sound constitution are required. Both walks are signposted, with full explanations at each sight. A descriptive leaflet of each is available from the City Tourist Office in Place Guillaume II, which also can provide a guide (€70 for 2 hours) regardless of the size of the group).
