Oberweis

$$

Arguably Luxembourg's most famous patisserie-café is also the inventor of the "bamkuch," a strange, ribbed pipe of biscuity almond sponge covered in icing. Light lunches are available, with the likes of quiche Lorraine and spinach pie on offer, and there's a quiet terrace on the street. Other outlets include a branch inside the main railway station.

Grand Rue 16, Luxembourg City, 1660, Luxembourg
47-0703
Known For
  • The pastries make for a good post-breakfast pick-me-up
  • Their hot chocolate is a must in winter
  • Superb cakes and chocolates to try

Palais de Chine

$$

There are lots of theories as to why Luxembourg has so many Chinese restaurants, but there's little argument that Palais de Chine is one of the best. The menu, like the decor, has a touch of French flair. Duck, in all of its variations, has a national following.

Stop in the Schumacher Patisserie for a sweet treat or a light lunch. Everyone in town comes here at some point during the day.

Restaurant Arpège

$$$

A serene refuge near the busy train station, this quaint neighborhood spot is hidden on an easily missed side street. The menu changes every few months, but always includes fresh seasonal ingredients, including beef, pork, and lamb, all prepared in simple country style. The 20-table dining area is decorated with rattan furniture and soothing original art.

Restaurant Comte Godefroy

$$

The restaurant of the Hôtel de la Sûre also has the best food in town. It's solid brasserie cooking at a decent price (for Luxembourg), where hearty portions of cordon bleu, schnitzel, and steaks slathered in pepper sauce please the belly as much as the senses. You can also just stop by for a coffee and a cake in their café.

Rue du Pont 1, Esch-sur-Sûre, 9650, Luxembourg
83-9110
Known For
  • Hefty portions of classic crowd-pleasers
  • The faux-stone medeival setting is charming
  • A nice choice of local beers

Restaurant Postkutsch

French cuisine in all its decadent glory is the order of the day at chef Claude Magnin's Alzette staple. Special mention goes to the magnificent cheese cart, whose wares can be ordered for takeaway outside of service hours and account for no less that two courses in the decadent tasting menu.

Rue Xavier Brasseur 8, Esch-sur-Alzette, 4040, Luxembourg
54-5169
Known For
  • Assured French cooking with an elegant touch
  • Great service and exquisite presentation
  • We have to mention the cheese again!

Roma

History courses through the menu here. The first Italian restaurant to open in Luxembourg (back in 1950) is still arguably the best loved in the city. Black-and-white stills of old Italy evoke an elegiac tone, and, in truth, there’s little revolutionary here: just the classics done well, and often. Handmade pastas, bold truffle flavors, and a great choice of grappas and Italian wines accompany a menu that is heavily seasonal. Just embrace what the months bring.

Rue Louvigny 5, Luxembourg City, 1946, Luxembourg
22-3692
Known For
  • It’s an institution among locals, and worthy of their love
  • Seasonal menus keep things fresh
  • Friendly professional service

Um Plateau

$$$

A number of eateries here skewer that middle ground between bar and restaurant; this does it better than most. Chic, cozy, and with one of the more packed terraces in the city, Um Plateau sits aside from the rest of the Grund. The à la carte menu may slip all too snugly into standard brasserie fare, but the reason it’s the hosting spot du jour for locals is the tapas-like small dishes (think: wagyu sliders, shrimp popcorn, and foie gras). That the kitchen serves until the small hours only solidifies its standing on the cool late-night dining circuit.

Plateau Altmunster 6, Luxembourg City, 1123, Luxembourg
22-3692
Known For
  • Fun terrace
  • Good small plates
  • Open late
