La Locando di Postino

$ | Via Picone 10, Salina, Italy

In a converted 150-year-old farmhouse that once housed local priests, this really special boutique hotel in Pollara is a family affair, run by husband and wife Mauro and Amelia (and their children Mariachiara and Francesco). Since they originally renovated and opened the property in 1994 to the present-day, the family is still wholly in charge, respecting nature and their surrounding land and promoting environmental sustainability at every turn. Even the structure is Ecolabel-certified by the EU. With little touches from the past, the rustic-chic rooms are decorated in Aeolian style, each with its own personal patio and hammock, making this place all the more special.

Pros

  • Eco-certified hotel

  • Restaurant on-site

Cons

  • Not so centrally located within Salina and far from all of the ports
  • A car or scooter is necessary if you want to explore other parts of the island

Quartara Boutique Hotel Panarea

$$$ | Via San Pietro 15, Panarea, 98050, Italy

Family owned and operated by Maria Pia and her siblings, this boutique hotel is a unique find on the island, offering quiet luxury, the warmest Italian hospitality, and a sophisticated yet relaxed environment. The beautiful white structure (typical of Panarea) was originally the first and only supermarket on the island—and had the very first telephone. It's been an affittacamere (old Italian guesthouse) since 1964, having been transformed into a lovely oasis overlooking the sea with tastefully designed rooms, a good restaurant, and a staff that make you feel like you are home.

Pros

  • Luxury at a great value
  • Wonderful welcome and hospitality
  • Minimal but beautifully decorated rooms with handcrafted pieces

Cons

  • Some rooms don’t have a view
  • Restaurant open to non-hotel guests

Tenuta di Castellaro Winery & Resort

$$ | Via Caolino s/n, Lipari, 98055, Italy

Driven by their passion for wine and the island of Lipari, the visionary Lentsch family decided to embark on a project of great scale beginning in 2006 (spanning 2,000 square meters) ending with the beautiful and unique result that you see today: three micro-residences designed with the most modern amenities and plant technologies in keeping with full respect of nature. Everything on this property is eco-friendly (solar chimneys, a wind tower, and thermal labyrinth to name a few) and features primarily local products, an external lava stone pool, and a patio completely immersed within the vineyard. This is slow Sicilian living to the utmost degree.

Pros

  • Full immersion of nature and serenity with the most incredible views of all of the islands
