Searching for That ‘White Lotus’ Vibe This Summer? These 13 Hotels Deliver

Luxe Sicilian resorts, minus the hijinks of HBO’s ‘White Lotus.’

Season two of the award-winning HBO hit series White Lotus brings viewers on a virtual trip to Sicily, Italy’s largest island, where the crystal blue waters of the Mediterranean, intricate, Baroque architecture, and ancient Greco-Roman temples serve as the sultry backdrop for slow-simmering tension and desire.

Though the White Lotus chain of five-star resorts was the invention of show creator Mike White, anyone can check into the real-life film locations that set the stage for the passion-filled drama. Expect over-the-top dining, indulgent spa treatments, and all the amenities that White Lotus travelers expect, minus the high jinx, at these beautiful resorts on the island of Sicily.

San Domenico Palace

Located on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in the ancient town of Taormina, the lavish San Domenico Palace is a Four Seasons resort that played the role of the White Lotus in season two of the Emmy-award-winning comedy drama.

The White Lotus vibe is so strong here you might expect the series’ incredible soundtrack to begin accompanying you as you sip a Negroni poolside, swirl artisanal spaghetti “Mount Etna” (tomato fondue and salty ricotta cheese) onto your fork at Principe Cerami, or settle in for a hot lava stone massage at the Botanica Spa. Book the most coveted suite, the Royal Suite, where you can soak in the Sicilian sun on your private terrace and cool off in your plunge pool.

Also in Taormina, the timeless Grand Hotel Timeo has welcomed guests since 1863. Situated next to the town’s Greek theater and surrounded by six acres of storied gardens, the spacious suites here have private terraces that overlook the town’s medieval center or the seemingly endless sea; the two-bedroom Presidential Suite has its own jacuzzi and a terrace vista of Mount Etna’s snowy peak. The hotel’s onsite, Michelin-starred restaurant, Otto Geleng, serves exquisite authentic Sicilian cuisine. The resort also offers private experiences, including a guided trek up to Mount Etna for an aperitivo and a tour of the island via Vespa a la Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge).

Hotel Feudo Vagliasindi

In episode five, characters Harper (Aubrey Plaza), Ethan (Will Sharpe), Cameron (Theo James), and Daphne (Meghann Fahy) visit a lush winery situated about halfway up Mount Etna, among the lava flows. The scene was filmed on location at Feudo di Mezzo Winery, where even real-life visitors not staying at the fictional White Lotus can sample the exceptional Sicilian DOC wines. A scenic 20-minute drive away lies the Hotel Feudo Vagliasindi, a luxury resort immersed in the region’s volcanic soil and Sicilian sunshine-powered vineyards. Housed in a 19th-century Art Nouveau-style villa, the hotel borders Etna Park, Sicily’s largest protected nature reserve. The hotel boasts a cantina filled with hundreds of bottles of DOC Sicilian wine waiting patiently to be uncorked and an in-hotel restaurant specializing in regional dishes like polpette in foglie di limone (meatballs cooked in lemon leaves) and pasta alla norma (pasta with a rich eggplant and tomato sauce).

Q92 Noto Hotel

In episode three, Daphne Daphne (Meghann Fahy) and Harper (Aubrey Plaza) set off on a girls’ trip to Noto, a small Sicilian town that brims with Baroque architecture. While the uber-rich will want to check into a private, luxury villa like the two White Lotus frenemies, the Q92 Noto Hotel, a former palace in the heart of Noto, offers luxury guest rooms and suites with high ceilings adorned with frescoes. Request a room with a terrace overlooking Noto’s Via del Corso, the site of one of Sicily’s most important yearly events, the famous Infiorata di Noto, a festival that celebrates springtime by carpeting this main street with colorful designs made of flower petals.

On a budget, I go to dinner or a spa at these hotels, not to stay. One hotel you mentioned, for a one bedroom, is $36,000 a night + change.
