Il Guelfo Bianco

$$ | Via Cavour 29, Florence, 50129, Italy

The 15th-century building has all modern conveniences, but Renaissance charm still shines in the high-ceiling rooms. The Bargiacchi family has run the place for more than 20 years, and their collection of 20th-century art contrasts nicely with classic furnishings. Larger-than-usual single rooms have French-style beds, and are a good choice for those traveling alone. Breakfast can be taken in a small outdoor garden when weather permits.

Pros

  • Great staff
  • Beautiful floors made of either parquet or marble
  • Sumptuous breakfast

Cons

  • Rooms facing the street can be noisy
  • Might be too removed for some

Il Palazzo Experimental

$$ | Dorsoduro 1411, Venice, 30123, Italy

Of-the-moment Parisian designer Dorothée Meilichzon composed the striped pastel color palette at this hip boutique hotel—the first Experimental Group property in Italy—hidden inside a Renaissance palazzo facing Giudecca Canal. Spacious rooms in soothing colors feature terrazzo floors and minibars filled with local products and ready-made Experimental Cocktail Club cocktails; some have balconies with fabulous canal views, while others overlook the back garden or, sometimes, adjacent buildings. The in-house Ristorante Adriatica serves coastally inspired cuisine, and you’d be remiss to stay here and not sample an inventive drink at the attached Experimental Cocktail Club. Some of Venice’s top art stops—the Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and Punta della Dogana—are just a stroll away.

Pros

  • Fun, whimsical decor
  • Quiet location away from the Venice crowds
  • Trendy cocktail bar on-site

Cons

  • Not all rooms have water views
  • Little storage space in bathrooms
  • No gym

Recommended Fodor's Video

Il Palazzotto

$$ | Via Sette Dolori, 39, Matera, 75100, Italy

Interestingly renovated residence hewn out of the tufa rock, with a relaxed lounge/reception backdropped by a large Guerricchio canvas and atmospheric, sculptured breakfast room and cozy niche; a choice of high-dome ceiling, multishape rooms and suites—a mix modern and rustic furniture offset by sleek lighting. The layouts of the rooms vary with the idiosyncrasies of each stone dwelling: some are spacious while others have odd design choices like a minibar and coffee/tea facilities next to a shower and toilet.

Pros

  • Larger rooms in the sassi caves are more spacious and unique
  • Decent if unspectacular buffet breakfast
  • Radino wine tasting and bistro

Cons

  • Some glazed doors face wandering tourists and terrace bar chat
  • Free water not provided in rooms
  • Basic showers and fiddly lighting switches

Il Sole di Ranco

$$ | Piazza Venezia 5, Ranco, 21020, Italy

For more than 170 years the same family has run this elegant inn—about an hour's drive from Verbania on the banks of the lake opposite Stresa—where guest rooms are in two late-19th-century villas surrounded by a garden and the chef does the family proud in the exceptional restaurant. Lake trout and perch find their way onto the menu, as do artichoke dishes in spring and eggplant in summer.

Pros

  • Classic lake setting
  • Tranquil grounds
  • Lovely pool area

Cons

  • Far from the tourist center (hotel offers tours with private drivers)

La Calcina

$$ | Dorsoduro 780, Venice, 30123, Italy

Many notables (including Victorian-era art critic John Ruskin) have stayed at this hotel, though they might not recognize it after its series of upscale renovations; it has an enviable location along the sunny Zattere, as well as comfy rooms and apartments with parquet floors, original 19th-century furniture, and firm beds. You can reserve the rooftop altana (wooden terrace) for sunbathing or a private retreat, or enjoy an afternoon tea in one of the lounge's quiet corners with flickering candlelight.

  • Quiet, peaceful atmosphere
  • Well-regarded restaurant with terrace over Giudecca Canal

La Favorita

$$$$ | Via T. Tasso 61, Sorrento, 80067, Italy

The lobby might be a glamorous white-on-white extravaganza of Caprese columns, tufted sofas, shimmering crystal chandeliers, silver ecclesiastical objects, and gilded Baroque mirrors, but the charming staff ensure the vibe is elegantly casual, the guest rooms are well equipped and spacious, and the rooftop pool area has magnificent bay and Vesuvius vistas. The garden is also a delight, but that's no surprise, as owner Enzo Manniello also runs Sorrento's famous garden restaurant O' Parrucchiano.

Pros

  • Central location
  • Beautiful terrace
  • Idyllic garden

Cons

  • No views to speak of from guest rooms
  • Lack of decent air-conditioning and room thermostat control

La Locanda del Conte Mameli

$$ | Via delle Terme 8, Olbia, 07026, Italy

Housed in a remodeled palazzo built at the end of the 19th century for the count after which it is named, this small and select hotel occupies a quiet location on a traffic-free backstreet just a few steps from Corso Umberto. There are exposed granite walls and quirky period touches everywhere, although facilities are modern, including spacious rain showers in the marble bathrooms. Suites and the extra-large suites boast their own veranda or balcony, spa bath, or sauna, Fresh and varied breakfasts are taken in the basement, from which you can access a lower level where massage treatments are available—just steps away from the remains of an ancient Roman aqueduct! La Locando di Postino

$ | Via Picone 10, Salina, Italy

In a converted 150-year-old farmhouse that once housed local priests, this really special boutique hotel in Pollara is a family affair, run by husband and wife Mauro and Amelia (and their children Mariachiara and Francesco). Since they originally renovated and opened the property in 1994 to the present-day, the family is still wholly in charge, respecting nature and their surrounding land and promoting environmental sustainability at every turn. Even the structure is Ecolabel-certified by the EU. With little touches from the past, the rustic-chic rooms are decorated in Aeolian style, each with its own personal patio and hammock, making this place all the more special.

La Residenza

$$$ | Via Emilia, 22/24, Rome, 00187, Italy

This cozy hotel in a converted town house near Via Veneto is popular with American travelers thanks to its location close to the embassy, American-style breakfast, and helpful staff. Rooms are basic, comfortable, and tasteful (although single rooms are almost windowless), but the hotel's real draws are its bar, terrace, and lounges, which are adorned with colorful wallpaper and inviting loveseats. The garden is a blissfully quiet setting, especially when compared with the all-go vibe of the neighboring W Rome.

$$$$ | Via Tragara 8, Capri, 80073, Italy

If you're bronzed, beautiful, or both, this is your kind of hotel—a white Moorish mansion that evokes Hollywood-style Capri, complete with hillside terraces (indeed, the name means "little stairway"), winding paths, bougainvillea arbors, and an Architectural Digest opulence. The interior features Venetian blackamoor statues, Empire-era consoles, and Valentino fabrics; guest rooms have overstuffed sofas, bright colors, large terraces, and his-and-her bathrooms (most with whirlpool baths). Outside, one of Capri's bluest pools is the fetching setting for delicious luncheons.

Locanda Ca' Zose

$ | Dorsoduro 193/B, Venice, 30123, Italy

The idea that the Campanati sisters named the 15 rooms in their renovated 17th-century locanda after the stars and constellations of the highest magnitude in the Northern Hemisphere says something about how personally this place is run. That's a real plus, as is the location on one of the brightest, most tranquil canals in the Dorsoduro area, but only two minutes from the Salute, the Accademia, and the Guggenheim Museum, and also handy to the Zattere promenade. The cheeriest rooms are on the top floor overlooking the canal.

Maison Milano | UNA Esperienze

$$ | Via Mazzini 4, Milan, 20123, Italy

Inside this faithfully restored palazzo dating from the early 1900s, spaciousness is accentuated with soft white interiors, muted fabrics and marble, and contemporary lines. Massive mirrors don't hang, they lean; baths are almost as spacious as the living areas; a refined hush prevails. Though there's no restaurant or breakfast room, if you wish you can dine in privacy with room service for breakfast (for an extra fee).

Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como

$$$$ | Via E. Caronti 69, Blevio, 22020, Italy

The nine 19th-century villas that comprise this Lake Como outpost of the extravagant Mandarin chain have been thoroughly updated for the 21st century, offering a quiet setting (just north of the busy town of Como) and luxurious amenities that include a 14,000-square-foot spa and a swimming pool that "floats" above the lake. Public areas, guest rooms, and suites have beautiful lake views; some accommodations also feature floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces or gardens. Dining options include the lakefront L˜ARIA restaurant, which serves Mediterranean cuisine, and the more casual CO.MO Bar & Bistrot. You can do your sightseeing from the rooftop terrace of the Marcella, a midsize hotel with the feel of a smaller, more intimate establishment, where staff go the extra mile to make your stay pleasant. Many rooms also have good views, and all are decorated in tasteful color schemes, some with floral prints and mirrored walls. The spacious suites are ideal for families. The hotel is 10 minutes from Via Veneto and Termini Station.
