Locals line up each morning for the delicate, light pastries made by this local confectioner. Even a novice can taste the real buttercream in the famous Eszterházy torta, which is a truly magnificent cake. Locals say the Sacher torte is every bit as good as it is in the famous Sacher Hotel in Vienna. It's usually crowded on weekends with families.

Gerbeaud Kávéház

$ | Parliament

Proudly bearing the name of famed confectioner Émile Gerbeaud, who brought the glamour of Paris with him to turn-of-the-century Budapest, this elegant coffeehouse dating from 1858 has remained the pride of the nation ever since. It's a bit of a tourist spot and can be pricey for Budapest standards, but a savvy tip is that cakes ordered for takeaway are half the price of those eaten in-house.

Nagyi Palacsintázója

$ | Castle District

This branch of the small chain, which means "Granny's pancake house" in English, is a decent stop for a very affordable Hungarian-style pancake any time of day or night. The location by Batthyány tér is pleasant compared to other branches, and there are tables outside in summer. The only downside is that the pancakes aren't made fresh, but bulk-cooked in advance and then warmed through.
