Altes Mädchen

Schanzenviertel

Beer fans will be hard-pressed to find a better spot in town to sample that amber nectar. With a number of local beers on tap and more than 60 craft beers to order from, plus a decent selection of German pub food, it's unsurprising that this gastropub has maintained a glowing reputation since opening in early 2013. On weekends, breakfast is served from 10 to 2.

Fox and Hound

Westend

The full name is Fox and Hound English Pub and Lounge, which says it all. Patrons of this traditional British pub in the middle of Frankfurt are mainly British and come to watch the latest football (soccer to Americans), rugby, and cricket matches. Enjoy the authentic British pub food including fish and chips, 35 whiskies, bitters, and stout. Monday is \"steak and whiskey\" night, with American-style sirloins and rib-eyes and half-price drinks.

Gretel und Alfons

St. Pauli

Northern Germans are not best known for mingling, but at this small pub in the middle of Grosse Freiheit, you can strike up a conversation with the person sitting next to you. Perhaps that's why it was a firm favorite with the Beatles, who could often be found here when not performing at a number of clubs on the street.

HOLY CRAFT Beer Bar

If you tire of the typical Altbier served at most of the city's breweries and taverns, this craft beer bar serves the latest concoctions from German microbreweries across the country, inspired by distinctly non-German styles, including IPAs and even sours.

Kilian's Irish Pub and Ned Kelly's Australian Bar

Altstadt

Just behind the Frauenkirche, Kilian's Irish Pub and Ned Kelly's Australian Bar (adjoining bars) offer an escape from the German tavern scene. Naturally, they have Guinness and Foster's, but they also serve Munich's lager, Augustiner, and regularly televise international soccer, rugby, and sports in general. There's also free live music five times a week, from solo artists to bigger bands. Table reservations are not possible.

Schnookeloch

In the same location since 1703, it was a favorite of the Burschenschaften, or dueling fraternities, for two centuries. These days it's popular with Heidelberg's university students, locals, and visitors for its traditional ambience and well-priced food and beer that starts flowing at 7:30 am daily. The wood-panel walls are filled with historic photos and maps. There also are budget-price rooms upstairs.

Weinstock

This upscale bar, pub, and restaurant in a Renaissance building offers a huge selection of good wines.
