On the Moselle River at the feet of the Vosges, Épinal, a printing center since 1735, is famous throughout France for boldly colored prints, popular illustrations, and hand-colored stencils. Just 6½ km (4 miles) southwest of the city center is the Épinal American War Cemetery (open daily 9–5) which contains 5,255 graves of American servicemen and women who died during World War II.
