Market Square
As in many Finnish towns and cities, Turku's Market Square has a central location in a grid street plan, providing a wide-open public space for residents and visitors alike. It has recently reopened after several years of development (another familiar feature of continuously modernizing Finland), including the construction of an underground parking garage. It's the venue for a convivial village of tented stalls selling flowers, fruits, and vegetables as well as baked goods, clothing, and trinkets. It’s also an occasional summer concert venue and the site of a charming Christmas market. A striking new wooden pavilion housing a café opened in autumn 2022. The city's main shopping street, Yliopistonkatu, leads off to the west from the square.
