Museum Inn

$ | High St., Wimborne Minster, DT11 8DE, England

It's worth seeking out this characterful 17th-century "country pub with cottages and rooms," located 10 miles north of Wimborne Minster in a lovely area designated a National Landscape. Despite a stylish makeover, the building retains many of its original period features, such as the bar, flagstone floors, and inglenook fireplace. Bedrooms, some with four-posters, have a country-house feel. The Nici

$$$ | West Hill Rd., Bournemouth, BH2 5EJ, England

Located on a cliff above Bournemouth's sandy beach (a rarity in pebbly Britain), this stylish conversion of an Edwardian grande dame takes its inspiration from the hip Art Deco hotels of Miami's South Beach, with lots of palm tree decor, original contemporary art in the public spaces, and airy white bedrooms. Seafront rooms—some with private sun decks, others with outdoor hot tubs—overlook the pool area and rolling lawns with the English Channel beyond. The restaurant continues the Floridian theme with dishes like lobster and crayfish linguine, crab cakes, and grilled salmon. OSKIA products are featured in the spa, and there are heated indoor and outdoor pools, a beachside bar, and a small-plates restaurant. A cinema offers nightly screenings.

The best accommodation option in Arundel town center, this 18th-century coaching inn on the main street was, like Arundel's cathedral and castle, built by one of the dukes of Norfolk (during the Napoleonic Wars, it was used to house soldiers). The Old Cannon Brewery

$ | 86 Cannon St., Bury St. Edmunds, IP33 1JR, England

This delightful old inn near the train station has a handful of comfortable, modern rooms—with private baths and free Wi-Fi—in a converted Victorian brewhouse. The pub serves tasty, predominantly British pub classics. True to the name the Old Brewery still makes its own beer, which is a great rarity in these days of brewery-owned chain pubs. The beer also goes into the batter for their fish-and-chips. How's that for holding up tradition?

Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel

$$ | Off B5343, Great Langdale, LA22 9JY, England

There's no more comforting stop after a day outdoors than the Hiker's Bar of this 300-year-old hotel at the head of the Great Langdale Valley. The stone floor and wooden beams echo to the clatter of boots, and the roaring, smoky fire rapidly dries out wet walking gear. Thick slabs of flapjack (dense bar cookies) from behind the bar will get you up the surrounding Langdale Pikes, as will the hearty, good-value house-made soup and pies. Guest rooms are decorated with traditional patterned carpets and flowered bed linens, and some have four-poster beds, though the hotel exudes a rougher version of Lakeland life far away from Beatrix Potter quaintness.

Pros

  • Wonderfully isolated
  • Ideally situated for walking

The Old School Hotel

$$ | 21 Fore St., Port Isaac, PL29 3RD, England

Perched on the cliffs above Port Isaac's minuscule harbor, this idiosyncratic lodging was a Victorian schoolhouse until the 1980s, and it nostalgically retains many of the features of its previous role. The hotel reverts to its former incarnation when it serves as the school in Doc Martin, a locally set TV series. Guest rooms are named after various school subjects—Geography, Chemistry, Latin—and vary considerably in size (so think about viewing the rooms before booking); most, however, have superb vistas, and some have small terraces. Bar snacks and full meals are offered in the restaurant, from baguettes to fresh seafood, Goan curry, and sirloin steaks. Limited parking is available—a rare find in Port Isaac.

Pros

Old Vine

$$ | 8 Great Minster St., Winchester, SO23 9HA, England

Ideally located opposite the cathedral, this 18th-century inn, now a gastropub with rooms, has received a smart, modern makeover without losing any of its character. Few rooms have actual cathedral views, though the top-floor Design House suite is an outstanding exception. A two-bedroom apartment in an annex uses Designers Guild fabrics, and another self-contained apartment is ideal for families. The gastropub below serves superb food and drink, with warming open fires in winter and tables on the terrace in summer. Permits are issued for street parking nearby.

Parkwood Hotel

$ | 4 Stanhope Pl., London, W2 2HB, England

Perfectly located just steps from the tranquility of Hyde Park to the south and the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street to the east, this sweet guesthouse oozes warmth, homeliness, and good value. With helpful hosts and simple but tastefully decorated rooms, it's the perfect little oasis in the middle of the hectic city. One grisly piece of historical trivia: it's situated near the site of the "Tyburn Tree," an enormous gallows used to execute prisoners from the Middle Ages until 1783 (and frequently referenced by Shakespeare)—a memorial on the street marks the spot. Tyburn is further immortalized in the small convent behind the hotel, which has a shrine dedicated to the hundreds of Catholics who were martyred there. The sisters conduct tours of the shrine.
