A renovated historic building blends a nice façade with modern rooms that have modern furnishings. Split-level design opens up the space in the restaurant. Some rooms have their own saunas and whirlpools, and the cellar has a wine bar.

Occupying a tiny corner of the square on the opposite side from the castle, this is the nicest hotel in town. Room No. 5 features some bright, 19th-century period furnishings and a pretty view of the square. The attic rooms are larger, with modern furnishings.

The hotel dates to 1870 but got a thorough face-lift in the late 1980s and another upgrade in recent years, making it both comfortable and convenient, especially if you're traveling to Brno by train, as it's just across the street from the station. High standards are maintained through the hotel's association with an Austrian chain. Service is attentive; the rooms, though small, are well appointed, with coffered ceilings and leather sofas. Ask for a room at the back, facing the town and away from the station. All of the rooms are no-smoking and can be booked without breakfast included.

The words "traditional communist-era hotel" don't generally evoke images of comfort, but this one was made much more inviting by a thorough makeover of the lobby and public areas. The rooms are small but clean, and the price is reasonable. It's a 15-minute walk from the main square.

A little inn with a reasonable price and central location, Pegas has plain rooms that are snug and clean, with wood paneling and down comforters. The staff are helpful and friendly and even speak English. An in-house microbrewery and restaurant will have beer lovers doing their sightseeing at the bottom of a tasty mug of lager.

Prim and nicely renovated, this hotel sits in the middle of the Jewish Quarter, on Husova ulice. The doubles are on the small side, but the suites, which cost just a little more, are quite roomy. Facilities are the best in Mikulov, particularly the ground-floor restaurant ($$), which serves a typical but delicately prepared selection of traditional Moravian dishes and some regional Jewish recipes from the 19th century.

A decent older lemon-yellow baroque hotel on the main square has suitably high standards. The public areas mix architectural details such as vaulted ceilings with plush, contemporary armchairs, but the basic rooms are inviting and well balanced. Ask for a room overlooking the square. Even if you don't stay here, have a meal at the very good hotel restaurant, arguably the best place in town for Czech cuisine.
