The Best Restaurant in Zagreb, Zagreb and Environs

Background Illustration for Restaurants

For budget fare, leave the main square, Trg bana Jela?i?a, and go up the steps toward Dolac (the main market). Halfway up the steps on your right is a row of bistros where you can get everything from bureks (a savory cheese- or meat-filled pastry) to simple pizzas to Balkan-style grilled meats for around half what you'd pay at a modestly priced restaurant. And do remember, though Zagreb is not exactly overflowing with budget sandwich shops, traditional bakeries have long fulfilled that role for locals; at such places, which are on practically every street corner, you can pick up a burek for as little as 10 Kn a piece.

Arepera Maracay

$ | Donji Grad

Founded by Ricardo Luque, singer in Zagreb-based Latin-jazz group Cubismo, this is a great spot to grab a bite of authentic Venezuelan street food—just choose among filling options for these cornmeal favorites, such as chicken, beef, pork, and cheese, and various sauces. Named after the founder's birthplace, Maracay, the restaurant is a six-minute walk southwest of the main square and features a small but cheerful interior with colorful tiles and murals.
