For budget fare, leave the main square, Trg bana Jela?i?a, and go up the steps toward Dolac (the main market). Halfway up the steps on your right is a row of bistros where you can get everything from bureks (a savory cheese- or meat-filled pastry) to simple pizzas to Balkan-style grilled meats for around half what you'd pay at a modestly priced restaurant. And do remember, though Zagreb is not exactly overflowing with budget sandwich shops, traditional bakeries have long fulfilled that role for locals; at such places, which are on practically every street corner, you can pick up a burek for as little as 10 Kn a piece.

Zagreb’s first Michelin-starred restaurant is completely deserving of that honor, serving up high-quality gastronomy with an extensive French, Italian, and Croatian wine list to match. And everything is offered in a charming location hidden among the narrow streets of the city center. The food is the star, of course, but a trip to Noel is an all-encompassing gastronomic experience that is the best of its type in the capital. Only a high-priced prix-fixe menu is offered, and it changes regularly, though often includes classics like a foie gras terrine or
