2 Best Restaurants in Zagreb, Zagreb and Environs

For budget fare, leave the main square, Trg bana Jela?i?a, and go up the steps toward Dolac (the main market). Halfway up the steps on your right is a row of bistros where you can get everything from bureks (a savory cheese- or meat-filled pastry) to simple pizzas to Balkan-style grilled meats for around half what you'd pay at a modestly priced restaurant. And do remember, though Zagreb is not exactly overflowing with budget sandwich shops, traditional bakeries have long fulfilled that role for locals; at such places, which are on practically every street corner, you can pick up a burek for as little as 10 Kn a piece.

El Toro

$$

Under the expert guidance of chef Mario Mihelj, El Toro serves up delicious Latin American and Asian fusion fare. Choices from a variety of steak and roasted meats to seafood and veggie dishes are served in the restaurant's romantically low-lit interior, which blends matte black decor with wooden elements. The restaurant is a bit outside the city center, about a 20-minute walk from the main square.
