Hotel de l'Univers

$ | Rue des Guillemins 116, Liège, 4000, Belgium

In business in one form or other since 1850, this landmark property on a bright, busy street in the town center has smart contemporary furnishings and caters primarily to the modern-day needs of business travelers. Its friendly efficient staff, however, make it a cut above most train-station hotels. Most of Liège’s city center sights are within walking distance for most, any there are plenty of buses for the less mobile. The hotel's bar and brasserie has an extensive food menu served until 10 pm.

Pros

  • Close to train station
  • Good-value breakfast
  • On-site brasserie

Cons

  • 20-minute walk from city center
  • Can be noisy
  • Proximity to station means surroundings can feel intimidating at night

Hotel Mercure Liège City Centre

$ | Rue St-Léonard 182, Liège, 4000, Belgium

This property on the banks of the Meuse is housed in a 17th-century former convent, and the brick-vaulted ceilings in some public areas add a charming touch of antiquity to what is otherwise a businesslike chain hotel, with well-appointed if characterless rooms. Rooms at the front have river views, while the brasserie-style restaurant, which serves classic local dishes, has a terrace in an attractive leafy garden.

Pros

  • Housed in a 17th-century convent
  • On-site parking available (for a fee)
  • Rear garden is a quiet retreat

Cons

  • A 15-minute walk from the main sights
  • Being part of a chain means rooms lack individual character
  • Road at the front is often busy and noisy
