The Hippest Hotels in Vienna
Don’t be fooled by the dirndls and lederhosen, the Viennese know how to be hip. They are a modest crowd, to boot, able to sniff trends like a bloodhound. The sudden rise of boutique and design hotels has unleashed boundless creativity, producing some of the most trendy lodgings and boutique hotels this side of the Danube. Here are some of our favorites.
Topazz
Why it made the list
The building looks like a bug-eyed creature, an unseemly fit among the 18th century old dames it has as neighbors. What could be cooler than that? The inside is more sleek and enchanting, and gives a wink to the Wiener Werkstätte tradition. The hotel has its own vineyard, and keeps each room stocked with a supply of wine.
Hotel Lamée
Why it made the list
With Hedy Lamarr as its muse (and namesake), this sister to the Topazz is a love letter to 1940s Hollywood glamour. The bright pink crushed velvet of little girls’ dreams brings it to the brink of kitsch, but it’s pulled back again by statement tubs and picture windows that groove with grownup style.
25hours Hotel Wien
Why it made the list
Describing this lodging to someone who has never been here is like recounting a dream you had; compelling circus themes dominating the walls, free mini cooper rides while they last, bike lending to see the town, lazing on the green grass, while sipping a beer from the hotel food truck … It is hipster hip, with a healthy dose of generosity and gratefully lacking in pretense.
