Fodor's Expert Review Benediktushaus

Freyung 6a, Vienna, Vienna, A-1010, Austria See on Map

In 1980, the Schottenstift Benedictine order opened a Bed & Breakfast-style guesthouse next door to its abbey. Since then, guests from all over the world have gotten the feel for how the monks live: The guesthouse is in a secluded spot, though in the heart of the Innere Stadt, there are no televisions or radios in the rooms, and the peel of church bells ring out into the courtyard. The hotel has been recently renovated and enlarged to add larger, three- and four-room suites.

If you arrive after reception closes (generally 7 p.m.), use your four-digit booking code to enter.

Tranquility is the order of the day. Soft hues and sunlight fill the rooms, which look out onto the courtyard. The updated rooms have hardwood floors and still simple, yet modish decor. There is wifi throughout, but be warned: the thick walls of the abbey can make service sketchy. A coffeemaker is provided in each room.

YOU SHOULD KNOW There is no housecleaning service on Sundays

As tidy and serene as the rooms, there are showers, but no tubs.

Continental Breakfast is served each morning.

Getting Around

Parking is zoned, and anyway nearly impossible to come by. You are within walking distance of most major sites, and the Herrengasse U-bahn station is nearby.

Melker Stiftskeller (2-minute walk) serves excellent Austrian fare, and is in the hundreds-year-old cellar of another abbey, so you’ll feel quite at home. The revered Cafe Central (1-minute walk) serves not just fine coffee, but also fine foods and sumptuous desserts. It’s also a good breakfast spot. Enjoy the people-watching and live piano music. Trattoria Martinelli (1-minute walk) serves lovely Italian fare in a warm, lively setting. For a vegetarian dining, Vollwert Lebenbauer (2-minute walk) is just around the corner.

If you need to punctuate the tranquility with a spirited vibe, Molly Darcy’s pub (2-minute walk) has live music. Wein & Co., Austria’s chain of upmarket wines, offers a sophisticated setting to enjoy your glass (or glasses) of Grüner Veltliner or Blaufrankisch. For the city’s greatest, most celebrated jazz club, head to Porgy & Bess (15-minute walk), where you can also find some of the finest cocktails.

The peaceful, reflective atmosphere is a nice way to bookend a busy day. The rooms are efficient, the staff is pleasant, and the central location is very practical.
