While Albania is a far cry from a foodie destination, there's plenty of good dining to be had in towns both big and small. For a top-notch experience, your best bet is to dine traditionally. Several culinary influences converge here—Turkish, Italian, Greek, and Slavic—but meat dishes carry the day, with a marked inclination toward grilling. Lamb is a particular specialty; goftë (spiced lamb croquettes) and the ubiquitous kebabs are popular forms. Fresh seafood is plentiful, and copious salads can be found on most menus. You'll never lack for coffee; served Turkish style, this strong, heady brew is the national drink.
Well worth a slight detour from the port's main drag, this cheerful, sea-themed hotel dining room combines a splendid outdoor terrace with sweeping views of the port, friendly, attentive service, and some of the best food in town. Riffs on traditional Mediterranean dishes, with an emphasis on fish, are always fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and beautifully presented: red peppers stuffed with spiced lamb and pignoli nuts served with a minted yogurt sauce; grilled jumbo shrimp with fresh basil risotto and mesclun salad; whole grilled fish with tomato coulis. Desserts are equally scrumptious, and sometimes include homemade ice cream and strawberries fresh from the chef's garden.
