Although the shopping on St. Croix isn't as varied or extensive as that on St. Thomas, the island does have several small stores with unusual merchandise. St. Croix shop hours are usually Monday through Saturday 9 to 5, but there are some shops in Christiansted open in the evening. Stores are often closed on Sunday.
If you've rented a condominium or a villa, you'll appreciate St. Croix's excellent stateside-style supermarkets (albeit with prices that are at least 30% higher than on the U.S. mainland). Fresh vegetables, fruits, and meats arrive from the mainland frequently and are always available. Try the open-air stands strung out along Route 70 for island produce.
An unexpected oasis of Crucian culture awaits at this locally owned gift shop. Check out their line of local preserves and syrups made using old-time recipes or pick up a book from a local author. They also carry colorful rainforest and recipe T-shirts as well as their famous Jack's Bay Pepper Sauce—your favorite foodie will thank you for this flavorful gift.
This shop sells pottery in bright colors, paintings of St. Croix, and the Caribbean, prints, and maps. They are all made by local artists, and they all make for perfect take-home gifts, though the shop also ships worldwide.
Shop here for carefully crafted glass plates, suncatchers, and more. The pieces, all made on-site by St. Croix glassmaker Jan Mitchell Larsen, are often whimsically adorned with tropical fish, flora, and fauna. Photography from Steffen Larsen is also on display and for sale.
