Dining by candlelight on the waterfront terrace of Mariners Hotel means excellent French cuisine with Caribbean flair—and one of the best dining experiences on St. Vincent. Start with a rich soup (piping hot French onion, fish with aioli, creamy pumpkin, or callaloo and conch) or escargots, stuffed crab back, or conch salad. Main courses include fresh fish and shellfish grilled with fresh herbs, garlic butter and lime, or creole sauce. Landlubbers may prefer sautéed chicken paillard with mushroom or Thai peanut sauce, grilled lamb chops, or beef tenderloin with béarnaise, Roquefort, or pepper sauce. For dessert, there's the wonderful mi-cuit, a warm chocolate delicacy with vanilla ice cream. Lighter, equally delicious fare is served at lunch—and you can enjoy a full seaside breakfast.

Take the little ferry (a two-minute ride from the dock at Villa Beach) to Young Island for a delightful lunch or a very special romantic evening. Stone paths lead to candlelit tables—some in breezy, thatch-roof kiosks—and gentle waves lap the shore. Five-course, prix-fixe dinners of grilled seafood, roast pork, succulent beef tenderloin, duck breast, and sautéed chicken are accompanied by local vegetables. Two or three choices are offered for each course, and freshly made breads (coconut, raisin, banana, country white, cinnamon, or whole-grain wheat) are sliced at your table. Wednesday is local buffet night; Saturday is a barbecue buffet. Lunch is à la carte—soups, salads, grilled meats, or fish—and served on the beachfront terrace. Tuesday and Sunday lunch is buffet-style.

You can't get much closer to waterfront dining than here at the AYC. This is the yachting crowd's favorite stop for landside meals—breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Freshly baked croissants and other pastries, along with pitchers of fresh-squeezed juice and piping-hot coffee, present the perfect wake-up. At lunch, the ciabatta sandwiches, salads, gourmet burgers, pasta, grilled fish, and more are served within striking distance (figuratively speaking) of the shark pool. And at dinner, you can enjoy fresh seafood or strip steak grilled to order, BBQ pork ribs, or, perhaps, a lobster prepared to your liking.

Basil's is the place to be—only partly because it's just about the only place to be in Mustique. It's mainly a wooden deck perched on bamboo stilts over the waves; there's a thatched roof, a congenial bar, and a dance floor that's open to the stars—in every sense. You never know what celebrity may show up at the next table. The food is simple and good—mostly seafood, homemade ice cream, burgers, and salads, great French toast and banana pancakes, the usual cocktails, and unusual wines. Wednesday is Jump Up & Barbecue Night, with live music; Sunday, enjoy cocktails and jazz as the sun goes down.

It's not just the air-conditioning that makes this restaurant cool. Basil's, at street level at the Cobblestone Inn, is owned by Basil Charles, whose Basil's Beach Bar on Mustique is a hangout for the vacationing rich and famous. This is the Kingstown power-lunch venue. Local businesspeople gather for the daily buffet (weekdays) or full menu of salads, sandwiches, barbecued chicken, or fresh seafood platters. Dinner entrées of pasta, local seafood, and chicken are served at candlelit tables.

To reach what is perhaps the most pleasant, the breeziest, and the most satisfying breakfast and lunch spot in downtown Kingstown, diners must climb the equivalent of three flights of interior stone steps within the historic Cobblestone Inn. But getting to the open-air rooftop restaurant is half the fun, as en route diners get an up-close view of a 19th-century sugar (and later arrowroot) Georgian warehouse that's now a very appealing boutique inn. A full breakfast menu is available to hotel guests and the public alike. The luncheon menu ranges from homemade soups, salads (tuna, chicken, fruit, or tossed), sandwiches, or burgers and fries to full meals of roast beef, stewed chicken, or grilled fish served with rice, plantains, macaroni pie, and fresh local vegetables.

This casual beach bar and restaurant on Lower Bay is the primary feeding station for long, lazy beach days. When the beach bar closes at dusk, the restaurant starts to fill up with those who have made reservations for an early dinner. For breakfast (from 9 am) or a light lunch, De Reef bakes its own breads, croissants, coconut cake, and cookies—and blends fresh juices to accompany them. For a full lunch or dinner, conch, lobster, whelk, and shrimp are treated the West Indian way; the curried conch and the lobster salad are favorites.

By day, this is the perfect spot for a harborside breakfast or lunch; just before sunset, boaters come ashore to what is arguably the most popular gathering place in Bequia—the Frangipani Hotel's open-air waterfront bar. After a drink and a chat, the mood turns romantic with candlelight and Caribbean cuisine in the open-air dining room. The à la carte menu emphasizes seafood and local dishes—and be sure to have a slice of Frangi's lime pie for dessert. At the Thursday Jump-Up, the Frangi barbecue buffet is accompanied by steelband music.

Jack's is a perfect spot for lunch when you're enjoying a day at Princess Margaret Beach…or any day when you're on Bequia. The sandwiches, salads, burgers and fries, or the grilled catch of the day along with a refreshing cold drink will certainly satisfy. The evening menu focuses on prime steaks and seafood. Dinner by the water is always a delight, but you'll have to maneuver some rough terrain (in your car or on foot) down from the main road and then navigate a lot of stairs farther down to the beachside restaurant—and back up, of course, after your meal. The Tuesday night barbecue is particularly popular.

Owned by French-born Jacques Thevenot and his Vincentian wife, Eileen, this French-Caribbean restaurant is convenient for the yachting crowd, day-trippers, and anyone staying awhile. The extensive menu marries French and West Indian cuisines: seafood and local vegetables are prepared with a French twist. Lobster is the specialty; select yours from the live lobster pool. Light salads and sandwiches are available at lunch. Try the BLT (bacon, lobster, and tomato). Choose dinner from either the à la carte or prix-fixe menu. Delicious baguettes and delicate pastries round out any meal.

Settle in for lunch on the patio, with a view of Young Island and the sea beyond, or dinner inside or alfresco. Enjoy local specialties—crab back, creole chicken, grilled just-caught fish, or the absolutely freshest lobster that you select from the live lobster pool. Latin dance classes on Tuesday night, Grillin' With the Captain (Earl Halbich of Fantasea Tours) on Friday night, Havana Night with live entertainment on Saturday night, and happy hour at the bar every night all add to the joie de vivre. The ambience and view definitely make up for the service, which can be a little slow. Plan to linger!

Put Sugar Reef Café on your "must do" list when visiting Bequia. The hotel's bar and restaurant is strategically placed in the Beach House lounge and sitting room, where French doors open to the sound of crashing waves. While perfect for a romantic dinner, it's also an excellent choice for a delightful lunch of savory seafood (try the lobster or fish roti or an open fish steak on focaccia bread), a vegetarian dish (tangy callaloo soup, callaloo lasagna, cassava flat bread with grilled vegetables, or the light but filling fire-roasted corn salad with goat cheese and spinach), or settle for a perfectly cooked hamburger with cheese, bacon, and grilled onion. The chef's lime pie is the perfect dessert, with passion-fruit mousse a close runner-up. All produce, fish, and meat are locally sourced. While the hotel is for adult guests only, children are welcome in the restaurant—particularly at lunch.

The Sapodilla Room at the historic Grenadine House (1765) is a hidden gem. Whet your appetite with a fruity cocktail at the West Indies Bar—the actual bar is from an old English pub, and a gallery of classic black-and-white stills of movie stars graces the walls. Move inside to the stonewalled dining room and enjoy grilled fresh fish, creamy seafood risotto, or tasty beef, lamb, and chicken entrées that reflect Caribbean flavors. Local people come here for special occasions and business dinners, as this is one of the few elegant dining spots on St. Vincent.

It's worth the trip to Industry for the delicious West Indian food and the view. Call first, though, as this is really off the beaten path. Lunch options include callaloo soup, burgers, or barbecued chicken wings and fries, along with a lobster sandwich or the daily special such as "goat water" (a savory soup with bits of goat meat and root vegetables), fresh fish, and conch.
