4 Best Hotels in Barbados

Background Illustration for Hotels

Most visitors stay either on the fashionable west coast north of Bridgetown or on the action-packed south coast. On the west coast, the beachfront resorts in St. Peter and St. James parishes are mostly luxurious, self-contained enclaves. Highway 1, a two-lane road with considerable traffic, runs past these resorts; strolling to a nearby bar or restaurant can be a bit difficult. Along the south coast in Christ Church Parish, several hotels are close to the busy strip known as St. Lawrence Gap, convenient to a number of small restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. On the much more remote east coast, a few small inns offer oceanfront views and get-away-from-it-all tranquility.

In keeping with the smoke-free policy enforced throughout Barbados, smoking is restricted to open outdoor areas such as the beach. It is not permitted in hotels (neither rooms nor public areas) or in restaurants.

Room rates in Barbados may be twice as high in season (December 15–April 15) compared with rates in the quieter months; however, special promotions and vacation packages are available throughout the year. Most hotels include no meals in their rates, but some include breakfast and many offer a meal plan. Some require you to purchase a meal plan in the high season, and a few offer all-inclusive packages.

Resorts run the gamut from unpretentious to exceedingly formal, and in terms of size, intimacy, amenities, and price. Families and long-term visitors may choose from a wide variety of villas and condos. A few small, cozy inns are found along the east and southeast coasts, as well as in the northwest, and these can be ultraluxurious, fairly simple, or something in between.

Villa and condo complexes, which continue to crop up along the south and west coasts, may be the most economical option for families, groups, or couples vacationing together. Nonowner vacationers rent units from property managers, the same as reserving hotel accommodations. Apartments are also available for vacation rentals in buildings or complexes with from 3 or 4 units to 30, 40, or even more.

ECO Lifestyle + Lodge

$ | Tent Bay, Barbados Fodor's Choice

This sustainable boutique hotel is inspired by its natural surroundings—a cliff overlooking the sea that's thick with palm trees and other tropical foliage. Each guest room faces the ocean and benefits from the sea breezes. The main house has four guest rooms on the ground floor, each with a kitchenette (no stove for cooking), patio, and ceiling fan. Two suites on the top floor, one with a full kitchen, can be combined as a two-bedroom apartment. A cottage next door has two air-conditioned studios, also with kitchenettes, that can be connected to become a large suite. All rooms are furnished in a "modern Bohemian" style that includes antiques, local arts and crafts, Bajan artwork, and pops of color. The property has a sauna, a babbling brook, and beautiful views of the East Coast. The ECO restaurant is one of the best on the island, with an authentic, farm-to-table, primarily plant-based and organic menu created by a Cordon Bleu--trained chef. Rugged terrain, stone paths, and rooms on varying levels make this property less than ideal for people with disabilities. In addition, no children under 12 years of age are allowed.

Pros

  • Peaceful and relaxing
  • Farm-to-table menu in the small restaurant
  • Yoga, massage, and meditation in the Zen Gully

Cons

  • Remote location
  • Some rooms have no air-conditioning
  • No TV or in-room telephone

Sweetfield Manor

$$ | Brittons New Rd., Bridgetown, Barbados Fodor's Choice

Perched on a ridge about a mile from downtown Bridgetown, this restored plantation house (circa 1900) was once the residence of the Dutch ambassador and is now a delightful bed-and-breakfast. The main living and dining rooms, guest rooms, and carriage-house suite are individually furnished with antiques and art. Each morning, the chef prepares a fabulous four-course breakfast—fresh-squeezed juices, tasty egg dishes, local fruit, and home-baked treats—and high tea is served daily in the large formal dining room. Lunch or dinner is available upon request. Tropical trees and plants surround a small natural-rock swimming pool tucked into the broad lawn. Sweetfield Manor is a great choice for solo travelers and couples—for a night or two or a week or two.

Pros

  • Peaceful enclave, primarily for adults
  • Inviting pool and gardens
  • Delicious gourmet breakfast

Cons

  • Long walk (or short car ride) to beach
  • Rental car advised
  • Not recommended for young children

Room 3 opens to a large sundeck with a small plunge pool.
