Forty secluded acres studded with scenic beach cottages set the tone for this relaxing island escape; a rocky promontory separates two coves, each with a sandy beach and calm water, perfect for snorkeling. The poolside patio is a good place for breakfast or cocktails, but sitting at the Point Bar (or the "Sunset Bar"), built into the rock between the coves, will become one of your favorite activities. Newly renovated clustered cottages have ocean or garden views, high-slanted ceilings, flat-screen TVs, and rustic furnishings. Take in the sunset from any of the three restaurants on the property, work up a sweat at the new fitness center, or relax in your private cottage and order room service.

Chub Cay Resort & Marina

$$$$ | Bahamas Fodor's Choice

Chub Cay Resort & Marina has been speedily and most beautifully restored to what is a luxury oasis on an otherwise rustic cay. Although it welcomes transient yachts, the club is moving to a more exclusive, private model that caters to large yachts, sports fishermen, and wealthy homeowners who own or will buy property there. The beautifully designed hotel offers 11 rooms and suites from $425 to $1,200 per night and eight private one-bedroom beach cabanas from $550. For more privacy and larger accommodations, there are 12 private villas with two to four bedrooms, ranging from $1,400 to $2,800 per night, some directly on the beach, and all with porches and balconies. The largest of these can sleep up to 10 guests, with fully stocked kitchens, high-speed Internet, and satellite TV. The resort and marina has high-speed Internet throughout, and a brand-new ship store is well stocked with food, beverages, and island supplies. The resort’s main focus is The Clubhouse that overlooks the infinity pool and marina. Its restaurant features a rotating variety of Bahamian-inspired dishes such as fine steaks, chicken, pastas, and seafood, along with locally grown fruits and vegetables from Chub Cay's garden. Dine and sip cocktails inside the beautiful dining room and bar or enjoy the breezy outdoor patio. Chub Cay is much loved for its fishing and snorkeling; game-fish fans head to the nearby Pocket, where the deep marine canyons of Northwest Providence Channel and the Tongue of the Ocean meet. Bonefishing fans scoot to the north side, where fish-rich flats abound, or west, even as far as the Joulter Cays. Closer to land, you can rent a small boat and skittle everywhere: to the cay's beckoning deserted beaches or to reefs for snorkeling or fishing. The club staff arranges guided fishing charters and snorkeling tours; the cay is home to four expert fishing guides with skiffs and boats. At the hotel you can rent bikes, kayaks, and paddleboards. Both the marina and airport are Bahamas ports of entry for quick on-site Customs and Immigration clearance. With its fine marina and convenient location on a main Florida to Nassau route—and to the southern islands beyond—many boaters are excited to see Chub Cay come alive and be restored to such a high standard, including a talented management and staff.

Pros

  • Excellent location for flats and offshore fishing
  • Quality bar and restaurant serves three meals
  • Luxury-style clubhouse and well-appointed rooms with balconies

Cons

  • Construction may occur, but away from hotel
  • Not much to do on land, but plenty on the sea

Sailing, snorkeling, scuba, and tennis are the main sports here, and you can also enjoy yoga, exercise, and pool volleyball. The cocktail hour and beach-hut parties buzz with excitement and dancing, fueled by fast-moving, gleeful mixologist-bartenders and techno-playing DJs. Nonguests can also enjoy the fun with a day and/or night pass, which includes meals, all you can drink, and activities. Guests can enjoy free, guided snorkel trips twice daily on top of complimentary snorkeling, kayaking, sailing, and paddleboarding. Bikes are available for rent. The main poolside dining area, The Christopher's, serves a well-presented buffet feast with a daily theme, and La Pinta Beach Lounge Restaurant is the more elegant restaurant with table service. Spa services are available at L'Occitane for an additional charge, and the on-site boutique is excellent, offering swimwear, resort wear, souvenirs, accessories, and even John Watling's fine Bahamian-made rums and vodka. Rooms have recently been renovated and are bright, clean, and comfortable, with good maid service. With its amazing beach and fun-loving staff, Club Med–Columbus Isle is a special place you can't get out of your head—or your heart. Prices vary seasonally and are influenced by the frequent special packages offered by the resort.

The Dunmore

$$$$ | Gaol La., Bahamas

This charming, retro-glam hotel with private cottages evokes a 1940s club in the tropics—with its mahogany bar, casual yet elegant dining room, and faded paperbacks in the clubhouse library, it's a favorite with the New England yachting set. • Private terraces and lawn chairs for every cottage

Eleven Bahama House

$$$$ | Dunmore St., Bahamas

Originally deeded in 1796 and built by Thomas W. Johnson, Briland's first doctor and justice of the peace, this handsome B&B, in a garden filled with bougainvillea, royal poincianas, and hibiscus, thrives thanks to the loving preservation work of genial innkeeper John Hersh. The guest rooms are sweetly furnished with a distinctive array of antiques and local artwork and overlook either the harbor or the garden. The inn’s supremely stylish suites have grown to include two cottage accommodations, and there’s a full on-site staff, including a chef who will also prepare in-house dinners, box lunches, and picnics. The property includes a huge courtyard that features a pool and a tiki bar.
