Harborside Resort Atlantis

$$$ | Paradise Beach Dr., Paradise Island, Bahamas Fodor's Choice

It you want more space to stretch out during your Paradise Island vacation, consider these one-, two-, and three-bedroom town-house–style villas that can accommodate up to nine guests and are fully equipped with separate living/dining areas, kitchens, and private laundry facilities. The pastel-color four-story buildings are situated across the marina from the main Atlantis resort, offering both peace and quiet; however, it is a 10-minute walk (or a shuttle ride) to the popular water park, beaches, amenities, and restaurants of the rest of the resort. Shuttles run throughout the sprawling property from 8 am until midnight. There is no beach here, but you'll have two relatively quiet pools to enjoy if you decide to stay on-site. Although you have access to the Atlantis restaurants and their meal plans, many guests hire a provisioning company to stock their villa before they arrive or take advantage of daily food-store runs. There is also a casual poolside restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and tropical drinks.

British Colonial Nassau

$$$ | 1 Bay St., Nassau, Bahamas

This 1899 landmark hotel is the social heart of Nassau; it's the setting for political meetings and events, and offers guest rooms with views of the harbor and old Nassau. The first colonial hotel, built by Standard Oil cofounder Henry Flagler, attracted socialites, royals, and industrialists at the turn of the 20th century and during the boom years of Prohibition. That building was destroyed by fire in 1921, and the present Mediterranean-style British Colonial—an exact replica—opened a year later, featuring a lustrous saffron facade, gleaming marble floors, and soaring arched ceilings. Those elements remain today, with modernized interiors dappled with stylish velvet and rattan furniture. The onsite dining options cater to your every need, whether it is a hearty poolside bite or a sophisticated dinner: The Mahogany Club, the hotel's flagship restaurant, offers a delightful mix of pan-European plates with Caribbean influences; the Woodes Rogers Tavern, a moody, high-ceilinged bar with dark walls and a glistening chandelier, is a popular gathering place; and the Sakana Noodle & Sushi Bar, a lively sushi bar using handmade noodles and fresh local fish for the perfect light bite. The fitness facility overlooks the garden, and though petite, gets the job done.

Pros

  • Friendly and attentive staff
  • Private beach and pool area
  • Centrally located near popular island attractions

Cons

  • Busy with local meetings and events
  • Harbor view means cruise crowds in the area

Club Med–Columbus Isle

$$$$ | Cockburn Town, Bahamas

After a long closure, this 89-acre oceanfront village reopened in 2022 and remains one of Club Med's most luxurious resorts, with state-of-the-art dive facilities and every water sport and activity imaginable. The all-inclusive resort caters primarily to upscale European, Canadian, and American couples, who stay a minimum of seven nights. The vibe is more low-key (except during parties!) than at most Club Meds, and it is one of the most recommended by Club Med fanatics. The GO staff is friendly and always offering assistance. Sailing, snorkeling, scuba, and tennis are the main sports here, and you can also enjoy yoga, exercise, and pool volleyball. The cocktail hour and beach-hut parties buzz with excitement and dancing, fueled by fast-moving, gleeful mixologist-bartenders and techno-playing DJs. Nonguests can also enjoy the fun with a day and/or night pass, which includes meals, all you can drink, and activities. Guests can enjoy free, guided snorkel trips twice daily on top of complimentary snorkeling, kayaking, sailing, and paddleboarding. Bikes are available for rent. The main poolside dining area, The Christopher's, serves a well-presented buffet feast with a daily theme, and La Pinta Beach Lounge Restaurant is the more elegant restaurant with table service. Spa services are available at L'Occitane for an additional charge, and the on-site boutique is excellent, offering swimwear, resort wear, souvenirs, accessories, and even John Watling's fine Bahamian-made rums and vodka. Rooms have recently been renovated and are bright, clean, and comfortable, with good maid service. The rooms and villas have a calming color scheme that includes beige and light blue, but the interiors are brightly painted, with wood furniture. Ranging from studio to two-bedroom options, most of the accommodations are on or near the beach and are in close proximity to the other amenities. Clustered on oleander-lined boardwalk paths along a lovely sand beach, the indulgence can definitely be justified. Each unit has a patio and a kitchenette or kitchen. Kayaks and paddleboats are free for guests. The huge circular poolside bar and patio attracts island crowds.

  • A short drive to George Town's restaurants
  • Great restaurant and bar on-site

Cons

  • Beach all but disappears at high tide
  • Accommodations are close together
  • Free Wi-Fi is unreliable

The Reef (Atlantis)

$$$$ | Paradise Island, Bahamas

This 497-suite tower has exquisitely outfitted studios or one- and two-bedroom condominium-style accommodations.
