2 Best Hotels in Eleuthera and Harbour Island, Bahamas

Background Illustration for Hotels

Harbour Island, more than any other Out Island, is where the cognoscenti come to bask in ultraluxurious inns and atmospheric small resorts. Follow the celebrities to $600-a-night cottages with views of the pink-sand beach or ultraelegant rooms in Dunmore Town. Eleuthera offers elegant intimate resorts next to pink- and white-sand beaches happily empty of crowds. Those on tight budgets have a range of friendly, tidy, and affordable inns, a few on the beach, for around $100 a night. For urbanites who want all-out American luxury, there are modern town houses with stainless-steel appliances and granite in the kitchens, and bedrooms for the entire family. Whether you spend a lot or a little, the staff on this friendly island will know your name after a day. Many hotels are closed in September and October.

Rock House

Rock House, Harbour Island
Perry Joseph

Originally a complex of historic harbor-side buildings, Rock House was designed by the late Wallace Tutt (the builder of Gianni Versace's mansion in Miami) and owner Don Purdy, who attentively orchestrates a pampering, intimate haven for his discriminating international clientele. Fresh orchids fill every room, private cabanas line the heated courtyard pool, and the congenial staff caters to your every need. Guest rooms are a sophisticated mix of contemporary and island furnishings, outfitted with thoughtful amenities like a picnic basket for beach forays and custom-designed extra-padded mattresses. After feasting at Rock House's celebrated restaurant, you'll want to take advantage of the spa services and yoga offered by the hotel. Although the hotel is on the harbor side of the island, chairs and umbrellas are set up daily for Rock House guests who want to relax on the beach. There's also a gift shop on-site where you can purchase souvenirs.
