Fodor's Expert Review Sarjeant Gallery
One of New Zealand's finest art galleries and most handsome heritage buildings sits on a small hill overlooking the city. Renowned for its domed neoclassical architecture, natural lighting, and magnificent display spaces, The Sarjeant also wins praise for the quality of its 6,000-piece collection and regularly changing exhibits spotlighting local, national, and international artists. Works in its care include 19th- and 20th-century paintings from home and abroad, photography, and a dynamic assortment of contemporary New Zealand pieces. The shop stocks fine glasswork and jewelry, much of it crafted by locals.
