Fodor's Expert Review Dawson Falls Mountain Lodge

Manaia Rd., off Opunake Rd., Dawson Falls, Taranaki, 4391, New Zealand

Markus, a highly qualified Swiss hotelier, first met Sera on this mountain; now they’ve returned with their family to run a charming alpine-style lodge on the southern slopes of Mt. Taranaki. Built in 1896 and loaded with Old World character, it offers stellar views of the coastline and native bush. Lodging choices include the Honeymoon Suite with its four-poster bed, the aptly named Panorama Room, and the quaint Family Room, which conjures up visions of the Brothers Grimm; all feature vintage wood paneling and carved headboards. Before retiring, guests can enjoy a sumptuous dinner and unwind in front of a roaring fire. Meal packages are available and highly recommended. The restaurant is also open to the public by day, and by reservation at night.
