THE BEST HOTEL IN PORT FAIRY

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Drift House doesn't need to boast; behind the unassuming facade are six beautifully designed suites that make you wish you could move in forever. The suites are housed in an Edwardian villa and in an 1870s bluestone residence steps from the waterfront. Vast beds are cloaked in the finest linens, curl-in-me armchairs and windows strategically placed for privacy and beauty. Each suite has its own gift: a wide balcony or cutting-edge kitchen, an intimate terrace or tree-lined courtyard. Breakfast is prepared to order by hosts John Watkinson and Colleen Guiney and served in the communal space, The Salon, and its fireplace and sunken lounge come into focus again for pre-dinner aperitifs and local wines by the glass. Book for the genuinely spectacular, Spanish-inspired dinner—offered on alternative nights; this level of service and attention is a rare jewel.

Pros

  • Walking distance to restaurants
  • Impeccable design and service
  • Fabulous breakfast

Cons

  • No children
  • Two-night minimum on weekends
  • Pricey

Merrijig Inn

$ | 1 Campbell St., Port Fairy, VIC, 3284, Australia

One of Victoria's oldest inns, this beautifully restored 1845 Georgian-style building overlooks Port Fairy's working wharf from King George Square. The locally sourced seasonal dishes on the daily changing menu may include ingredients like fresh-off-the-trawler seafood, bacon and pork from nearby farms, local buffalo cheese, and organic apple juice from a local heritage orchard. The restaurant serves dinner only. Accommodations are a mix of its popular ground-floor queen suites with snug sitting rooms and iPod docking stations and the cheaper storybook attic bedrooms. The roaring fireplaces are perfect for whiling away the hours with a good book, while breakfast is served in the light-filled conservatory with views of the charming cottage garden.

Pros

  • Cute and cozy
  • Great food
  • Roaring fire in winter

Cons

  • Upstairs rooms have character, but they're small
  • Books out fast
  • No dinner midweek
