  • 1. Dino's at Bumboras

    $$

Owner and chef Dino grows fresh produce in the backyard of his cottage and decorates the interior of this restaurant with eclectic artwork and furnishings. Head to this little eatery in the tiny hamlet of Bumboras, about 2 km (1 mile) west of Kingston, if you love Italian fare and seafood—the seafood risotto is especially delicious. The wood-fired pizzas are tasty and are loved by the gregarious locals who flock to this place. If fresh seafood is not your thing, try a sizzling sirloin or the chicken with pistachio, and round things off with a quirky dessert—liquorice ice cream.

  • 2. Golden Orb Cafe and Bookshop

    $

Named after the Golden Orb spiders that can be found in the owners' garden, this cozy diner is open daily for snacks and lunch. You'll find it tucked away along a little street not far from the visitor information center in Burnt Pine. Proprietors Jack and Caz serve traditional English fare, such as the ploughman's lunch (bread, cheese, pickles, and chutney) and hearty meat pies, along with tasty quiches and roast-pork wraps. If you simply want to unwind after a day's exploring with a book, drop in for excellent Campo coffee (with beans from a Sydney-based specialty roaster that sources its beans from around the world), and a cake—the locals suggest you try Aunty Dot's muesli slice.

  • 3. Hilli's Restaurant and Bar

    $$$

This is one of the island's best dining venues. Occupying a cute white timber cottage set in a garden, it's open at 10 am every day (except Sunday) for coffee and cake, and follows up with lunch and dinner. Evening diners may want to start with the pork rillettes (shredded pork served with wafer-thin bread), and then try one of the locally caught fish, such as trumpetfish or wahoo. The beef with homegrown vegetables and beef cheek tortellini are popular, and portions are generous. The chef also runs a cooking school. You'll find Hilli's in the same building as the Cyclorama attraction, behind the Pitcairn Settlers Village.

  • 4. Norfolk Blue Restaurant

    $$

This country inn and restaurant specializes in locally bred beef known as Norfolk Blue. The unique cattle breed, not found anywhere else in the world, has evolved from the stock first brought to the island by the British in 1788. They are raised on the restaurant's adjoining 100-acre farm by owner Robyn Menghetti. Today Norfolk Blue Restaurant is one of the island's best places to eat, serving melt-in-your-mouth beef that can be sampled in several starters, such as the beef strips in creamy pepper sauce on rice, and warm Asian-style beef salad. Beef-lovers have many main-course choices—braised beef medallions slow-cooked and served with dumplings, and aged prime cuts served with a choice of sauces are among the options. There's a pasta of the day and local fish for non-beef lovers, as well as delicious desserts such as Bounty chocolate flan, a tart with almonds, rum, and chocolate-fudge sauce. You can take a daily farm tour and also feed Mr. Bull, the owners' pride of the herd.

A popular breakfast, brunch, and lunch spot, Olive Cafe is in Burnt Pine and serves an all-day breakfast menu, as well as its specialties of sushi salad and vegetable-and-feta salad (the veggies are grown on a nearby farm). The large selection of cakes and muffins is mouthwatering, from the savory onion-feta muffin and the zucchini, lime, and pistachio cake to the chocolate cheesecake. The coffee is excellent.
