Ms. Thanh Can and her staff are also happy to help organize tours and onward travel, sometimes accompanying guests to the bus station to arrange tickets.

A true boutique hotel, the Nam Bo is small and personal with only seven large elegant suites (the corner suites are particularly delightful), friendly staff, great rooftop breakfasts, and many thoughtful little touches, such as local snacks left on the bed, a welcome cocktail, and a fruit platter. You can dine at the upscale rooftop L'Escale or the ground floor Nam Bo restaurants or have food from either place delivered to your suite. The reception staff is also very helpful when it comes to local information and tourist tips.

A clean and comfortable hotel, Ngoc Lan has a small, peaceful garden that's a great spot for relaxing. It's also walking distance to the Superdong office, where you can catch the ferry to Con Dao.

The big selling point of the three-star Que Toi Hotel is its large, airy rooms and on-site swimming pool. The rooms have all the mod-cons, including air-conditioning, a flat-screen TV, kettle, mini-refrigerator, a writing desk, and somewhat oddly laid-out bathrooms. In addition to the pool, there's a café, a karaoke floor, and a wedding reception venue.

Ha Tien's only four-star hotel, in a prime location on the river, is understandably proud of counting Vietnamese and Cambodian prime ministers among its guests, and its seven floors have a small swimming pool, a restaurant, and a dance club. Rooms are spacious, neat, and clean, with little sitting areas and marble-tiled bathrooms, some with bathtubs. Throughout the hotel there's liberal use of plastic plants, which isn't actually as kitschy as it sounds.

It may look like a giant shoebox from the street, but inside it's luxurious and elegant, with an emphasis on incorporating natural elements, such as coconut husks, bamboo, lacquer, and wood, into the design. Rooms are spacious, each with its own balcony, and the grounds are immaculate, with water features, ponds, swaths of green grass, and a stunning infinity pool overlooking the ocean. As is expected in this price range, it has a kids' club, gym, business area, a small recreation area with pool tables, an inviting spa, and a selection of high-end dining options, including Namaste, which serves up some of the best Indian in Vietnam.

There are neat, clean, freshly painted rooms in Tay Ho, one of Can Tho's few remaining colonial riverfront buildings, and despite state ownership, the hotel has a certain charm. Standard rooms have no windows, so it's worth paying a little more for one of the three deluxe rooms that open onto the balcony overlooking the statue of Ho Chi Minh, although the riverfront is noisy at night and in the early morning.

Although breakfast is not included in the room rate, there are a couple of sidewalk cafés nearby.
