Like many of Sapa's hotels, the Bamboo Sapa enjoys a stunning location with towering views of the surrounding mountains and the valley below, and to maximize this epic outlook most rooms have private balconies. The stars of the show are the high-category rooms—the Deluxe Mountain View rooms come with wood floors and king-size beds, and the Fansipan Suite benefits from an additional seating area with writing desk, perfect for penning soliloquies to the surrounding splendor.

The run-down hotel, which claims to be four-star, is one of the best options in town, which isn't saying much. It is, however, a suitable base for exploring the My Lai site—local buses leave from the bus depot across the road to the memorial site, a 30-minute journey. The staff speak limited English and the pool is crowded in the afternoons. Keep your expectations low to avoid disappointment.

"Resort" is a misnomer since there are no resort-type facilities, but this hotel, part of the Trung Nguyen coffee empire, is a dated albeit functional place to stay for a night just over 2 km (1 mile) from the center. Some rooms are much better than others, so check before committing to one. Next door is Trung Nguyen Coffee Village, a café with a large garden.

The bizarreness and kitsch factor at this tourist attraction is turned up so high it's almost off the scale, and unsurprisingly, the same goes for its 10 wildlife-theme guesthouse rooms. The cheapest rooms (the Bamboo and Termite Rooms) are quite small, but still fun for those with the right sense of humor. The Bear Room has a life-size bear with eyes that light up when you turn on the lights and a small fireplace in its belly.

This small hotel offers giant rooms designed with business travelers in mind. Each room is equipped with a sofa, table, and chairs so guests can host meetings if they so choose. The layout is unique and the entire hotel can be rented for corporate or social events. The lobby and pool area is posh, and the location—three minutes to the airport—can’t be beat.

With spacious, clean rooms, some English spoken, and a good central location, this five-story hotel, diagonally across the road from the Long Xuyen Hotel, has all the basics covered. Rooms have pine furniture, a writing desk, fridge, kettle, and even a bathtub in the bathroom. The location is great, close to the Co-Op supermarket and the Catholic church.

Despite its large and semigrand appearance, this hotel functions as a glorified minihotel. Rooms are basic, but bright and spacious, although the renovation job is pretty spotty. Bathrooms are clean, but old-fashioned, and bathtubs have hand-held showers. If your room disappoints, ask to see a few in the same category, as the most recently upgraded rooms are well worth the money and the quiet location is handy for restaurants and exploring the sights.

Homey and comfortable, the Family Hanoi Hotel is just off Le Thai To Street, a short skip from Hoan Kiem Lake. Floor-to-ceiling windows let Hanoi in, or you can keep the light out with fresh, modern curtains. Tastefully arranged artificial flowers, high ceilings, clean baths, and smiling staff in the lobby make you feel at home.

With a prime location on the seafront and many rooms with ocean-facing balconies, this is one of the better options in Cat Ba Town. While visiting guests may choose to eschew the in-house karaoke, there's much to recommend the hotel otherwise. Indeed, with its sweeping staircase extending upward from the lobby, it has a certain air of grandeur that other lodging options lack. Rooms are comfortable and clean and come equipped with decent mod cons, such as minibar and TV, and the hotel's café is a nice place to enjoy a Vietnamese coffee while admiring the outlook.

In one of the quieter Old Quarter streets, this boutique option provides a peaceful refuge from the bustle found elsewhere. There's nothing particularly arty or trendy about the place, but the cozy and comfortable rooms and attentive service compensate adequately for any lack of flash. Rooms are airy and ones on the upper levels feature stunning views over the city.

This idyllic option, which is run by a Belgian/Vietnamese couple, is situated in the middle of beautiful green rice fields with stunning views of the nearby mountains and about 500 meters away from the local village market. The accommodations are as attractive as the surrounding scenery, while an infinity pool overlooking the fields is a winning touch.

These small but quite nice bungalows lie at the foot of the mountain that houses the Hang Mua or Mua Cave. This guarantees that the area is always quite full of tourists and the hotel accommodates this with tons of selfie-worthy knickknacks. The bungalows have porches as well as outdoor and indoor showers. The restaurants on-site are also reasonably priced and filling.

At this little setup 8 km (5 miles) from My Tho run by a lovely husband-and-wife team, Khoi and Oanh, you'll choose between simple wooden or solid bungalows, both with air-conditioning and an outdated en suite outdoor bathroom, but the big attraction here is the minihobby farm, which is home to chickens, ducks, rabbits, geese, dogs, and cats. Oanh supervises the kitchen, which turns out fabulous Vietnamese home cooking. It's very popular with Vietnamese families on weekends, when Khoi organizes a full itinerary of kids' activities, including tug-of-war, sack races, and fishing (the old-fashioned way, in the water with a bamboo basket).

While its blocky, utilitarian building design is unlikely to impress, this relatively new hotel that opened in 2020 does offer no-frill quality lodging on a budget. The rooms are clean, spacious, and adequately furnished. There are no rooms smaller than 30 square meters. Aside from standard room options, there are also group rooms with three double beds for groups of friends or families traveling on a budget. The hotel Wi-fi is free, but not always reliable. The swimming pool is clean and large but unheated. 

The eight-story Indochine Hotel has large, comfortable, somewhat basic rooms, of which the higher floors have great views. It's worth paying a little more for a room with river views.

Located at the tapering end of the strip toward Mui Ne village, about 1 km (½ mile) from the tourist center, La Marina is a modern guesthouse for budget-conscious travelers who don't mind the two-minute walk to a more local section of the beach; the seaview rooms are a good deal. The staff are a delight and the beds are incredibly comfortable.

This has the feel of a state-owned hotel, though the facilities and beach location are first-rate. Rooms are basic but have whirlpool tubs, comfortable beds, and most have fantastic ocean views. The staff are charming, but on weekends and holidays it can be crowded and noisy with domestic tourists. The positive aspect is that during weekdays you'll have the whole beach to yourself. The restaurant can be a bit hit or miss, but just a stone's throw from the resort lie some of the best seafood restaurants on the Lang Co coastal stretch; their specialty is oysters char-grilled by the dozen.

It's hard to find fault with this cheery minihotel that overlooks the train tracks. The friendly staff speak great English and the rooms are clean and bright with big windows and bathtubs. Rooms in the front offer views of trains rumbling past.

In 2014, two British guys fell in love with the small fishing village of Bai Xep and opened a rustic homestay, which has grown to include a range of accommodations, from a 12-bed air-conditioned dorm room and glamping to deluxe rooms with private bathrooms, all on a secluded beach. Fill your days with beachside relaxation, exploring the local village and the nearby waterfall, or going fishing with locals. End the day with a communal dinner and bonfire on the beach.

The bungalows at Mac Lake are possibly the nicest in the park with good facilities including hot water and en suite bathrooms complementing the idyllic surroundings. Serene Mac Lake is one of the prettiest areas of the national park and the accommodations are certainly atmospheric. Adding to the general conviviality of the location is a lively common area. Traditional music is often performed here, and regular bonfires also make for lively gatherings. Dormitory accommodations in a large stilt house are also available for groups. To save energy there's no hot water in the stilt house, so cold showers are the order of the day.

Located directly across the fields from the Ecolodge, these beautiful bungalows look out over rice paddies and mountains. The service is very warm and friendly and free bicycles are on offer without extra charge. Beds are also extra comfy, and family rooms are nicely laid out.

If you are looking for something smart and comfortable in Mai Chau but don't want to splurge, then this cozy boutique option is ideal. There are only eight rooms in the hotel, creating a welcoming and intimate environment. All the rooms have French windows that open out onto balconies overlooking lush paddy fields. An open-air restaurant serves refined takes on White Thai cuisine. Owner Duong was born and raised in Mai Chau and also works as a guide.

Moon is one of Hoi An's secret success stories: from humble beginnings running a tailor shop on the outskirts of the Old Town, she made her name, closed down her shop, and built a beautiful property with a pool and modern rooms that will make your jaw drop. 

Opened in 2023, this hotel unleashes French flair, and the decorative details—large French windows and Parisian-style café on the ground floor—all make for a more memorable stay than a generic Vietnamese hotel.

More of a place to sleep only, this small and neat budget option somehow manages to be charming as well as functional, and the seafood restaurant with the same name next door means the lack of in-house dining isn't a problem. The hotel is also within walking distance of the beach, dive shops, and Con Son Café. It's a local, no-frills style hotel, with decent sea views, basic, relatively spacious rooms and Vietnamese-style bathrooms.

Sheltered in the mountain valleys of Lai Chau, overlooking the beautiful lake Dong Suon, the Lake House makes for an idyllic base within easy reach of Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park. Lakeside bungalows feature four poster beds swathed in romantic—and practical—mosquito nets, and all have a balcony or terrace where you can soak in the view. There's also a saltwater pool and an artfully carved timber meeting house, which is rumored to have hosted General Vo Nguyen Giap during the 1954 Dien Bien Phu operation, but now serves as the large restaurant and lounge.

Typical of the singular large hotel found in most provincial towns in Vietnam, this one boasts a prime location and generic city hotel rooms with little sitting areas and marble-tiled bathrooms, as well worn down facilities and a feeling that it is well past its glory days. Still, it's an easy pick and the receptionist try to be helpful. Outside of busy periods, you can confidently walk up without a booking and get a room.
