FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

The rain forest meets the stunning beach at Pimalai, where the seductive yet unpretentious luxury attracts guests from far and wide. Sleek Thai-style accommodations (including deluxe rooms, beachfront villas, and spacious hillside pool villas) are outfitted with teak floors, Thai silks, and private outdoor spaces (many also have infinity pools and outdoor showers). Nestled in a lush, delightfully cacophonous hilly jungle and overlooking stunning water vistas, the property is a paradise unto itself. The main areas are surrounded by hundreds of hectares of verdant land, which further honors the promise of privacy. Check in to relax by the pool, play on the beach, take a yoga class, and indulge in a sumptuous pampering session (booking ahead is essential).

Amanpuri Resort

$$$$ | Pansea Beach, Thalang, 83000, Thailand Fodor's Choice

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more sparklingly dignified hotel in Thailand—nor one quite as expensive. (The nightly rate for the most sumptuous villas tops B10,000.) On a cliff above a beach, this boutique resort boasts a beautiful view and a path down to the shore that travels within Khao Lak Lamru National Marine Park. Within the resort itself, a quiet natural atmosphere prevails. Rooms are in wooden cottages that are "rustic", in the sense that they do not have the usual explosion of silk fittings and Thai art that most resorts of this class have, but you'll hardly have to sacrifice any comfort here. Costa Lanta

$$$$ | 212 Klong Dao Beach, Koh Lanta, 81150, Thailand

One of the coolest things about this boutique resort is that some of the rooms are "convertible": If you're too hot you can open up the "walls" and allow the breeze to blow through. That said, it's not over-designy; sustainability is the big theme and some describe it as sort of upscale camping, with air-conditioning and a nice bathroom. The resort is at the northern end of Klong Dao Beach—the quiet end of an already quiet beach. Isolation is a blessing here, as the resort has almost everything you might need, including a pool table and a spa. The water here is swimmable, and snorkeling around Kaw Kwang Cape, while not exceptional, is pleasant and there are fish to be seen.
