The Best Place to Shop in Chiang Rai, Northern Thailand

Background Illustration for Shopping

Chiang Rai has a night market, on Robviang Nongbua Road, and although it's much smaller than Chiang Mai's, there many handicrafts and textiles on offer. A central section of Thanalai Road is closed to traffic on Saturday nights for a "walking street" market, and San Khon Noi Road is made a pedestrian-only area for a Sunday market.

Head out 12 km (7½ miles) north of the city center to the serene Japanese-influenced ceramics studio of Chiang Rai native Somluk Pantiboon to browse the lovely traditional and contemporary stoneware bowls, cups, teapots, vases, and original art pieces. The studio was established in 1991, and there's a café and small exhibition space. Want a closer look at northern Thailand's burgeoning art scene beyond all those cups, bowls, and plates? Stop at the Art Bridge gallery that Pantiboon co-founded, located on the road to the airport.
