Fodor's Expert Review Westin Grande Sukhumvit

259 Sukhumvit Rd., Bangkok, 10110, Thailand See on Map

There’s a lot you can say about this area of Sukhumvit. There’s seedy, cool, upscale, down market, great restaurants, street food vendors, and more. The Westin Grande tends to be on the upper end of the scale, providing its guests with a bastion of civility in an often-chaotic part of town. Catering to business types and families, the hotel distinguishes itself with a high level of service and a bevy of amenities that make you feel right at home.

The Westin has a kid’s club that often has a magician and also engages your little ones with arts & crafts and fun classes.

Highlights of the standard rooms here include great city views, patterned, soft carpeting, and Westin’s signature Heavenly® Bed, which is like sleeping on clouds. All rooms come with free water, daybeds by the window, and nightly turndown service.

Wi-Fi is free for all guests in rooms and public areas. And since the public area is a bar, you can get your Tinder swipes on without any hangups.

The bathrooms are a little more colorful than the bedrooms and are often plastered with futuristic blue tiles with separate showers and tubs. Westin uses its own brand of bath products.

On the seventh floor, the lobby has a number of retail shops and a lounge with great views of the city.

The giant salt water pool is on the roof of the hotel and is surrounded by comfortable loungers, day beds, and a running water fall. The Pool Bar has a light menu of salads, burgers, and pizza, and features a decent happy hour from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with buy-one-get-one-free specials.

Once a month the hotel hosts a DJ-led pool party that’s one of the wettest and wildest in town.

Vareena Spa has 10 treatment rooms and a number of signature services. Indulge in hydrotherapy, body scrubs, facials, and massages with great views overlooking the Bangkok skyline.

Westin Workout Fitness Studio has gray, rubber floors and Life Fitness machines for getting your cardio on. Daily classes are free and include yoga, Zumba, Thai boxing, and even Latin dance.

None of the dining here will blow you away, but you definitely won't be disappointed. Kisso Japanese restaurant dishes out delicacies and has over 50 choices of sake. Seasonal Tastes is an international buffet with ever-changing options and a crust-crisping pizza oven.

The drinking den of the hotel is just off the lobby called Zest Bar & Terrace. Here, guests can eat and drink with the cityscape in the background and listen to live music throughout the week and DJs on the weekend.

Getting Around

As we said, there are both BTS and MRT stops right next to the hotel and both can take you everywhere in the city. Walking around here is also great, as you’re never far from attractions, shopping, or food. If you decide to take a taxi, it’ll be easy to get one, just know that traffic is never great.

Across the street is El Gaucho Argentinian Steakhouse (1-minute walk) with bloody filets and heaps of chimichurri sauce. Just down the block is Koreatown Plaza (3-minute walk) with three floors of Korean restaurants. Check out Arirang for excellent Korean barbecue.

To get a true taste of Bangkok’s seedier side, you have to head to Soi Cowboy (5-minute walk), a long street filled with GoGo Bars and illicit activities that has to be seen to be believed. If you want to find some of the most innovative cocktail connoisseurs in Bangkok, head over to Dim Dim (15-minute walk) and be prepared to be blown away.

If you’re looking for a great central option with superb amenities without insanely high prices, then the Westin will be right up your alley. Just about all you could ask for is here: a great pool, signature spa treatments, a fun bar scene, and solid restaurants. The location is truly ideal as the immediate vicinity is chock-full of restaurants, bars, shopping, and some of Bangkok’s seedier attractions. There’s also subway and Skytrain access just out the door.
