Xintiandi is Shanghai's showpiece restoration project. Reproduction shikumen (stone gatehouses) contain expensive bars, restaurants, and chic boutiques. On warm nights, the restaurants’ outdoor tables are filled with diners watching the world go by.
Another good people-watching spot is the area around People's Square, which has some magnificent examples of historical architecture and a smattering of museums. The adjoining People's Park is a pleasant green space where it's possible to escape the clamor of the city for awhile.
