Brunei is Islamic; it's also stable, prosperous, and friendly, and there is no fundamentalism to speak of. Nevertheless, it is the most-observant Islamic nation in Southeast Asia. Visitors are welcome in mosques outside prayer times, but conservative dress is required. The sale of alcohol is prohibited. Do not use your left hand while eating or doing anything. Smoking is prohibited both indoors and on public transport. Men shake hands with each other, but not with women. Remove shoes when entering a person’s home, or any temple or mosque. Avoid pointing, which is considered rude. Do not touch anyone’s head. Don’t eat pork if dining with Muslims. Avoid public shows of affection, especially between sexes. Men should dress conservatively; women should wear long sleeves and keep knees covered. Try to avoid wearing yellow as this color is usually reserved for royalty.
