Arabian Courtyard Hotel & Spa

$$ | Al Fahidi St., Bur Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The Arabian Courtyard is caught between the bustle of the exotic Indian Meena Bazaar and business district, and the historic Al Fahidi Quarter; this is reflected in its inability to adhere to either style completely, but hover in the center. The interior has ornate fretwork and heavy wooden furniture, offset by vibrant silky fabrics. There’s a lively restaurant on-site with excellent biryanis and Bollywood singing or dancing most nights. The exterior is geometric and attempts to match the fort that now houses the Dubai museum. The clientele includes leisure travelers visiting the cultural center of Old Dubai, or those conducting business within the bazaar and souks.

Pros

  • Close to cultural and historic areas
  • Quirky place with plenty of soul

Cons

  • Dated lobby and public areas
  • Some rooms are small
  • Street noise from people and traffic

City Seasons Towers

$ | Khalifa Bin Zayed Rd., Mankhool, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
A welcome addition to the budget end of Dubai hotels, City Seasons is contemporary and architecturally quite interesting considering the price. Rooms are not huge at 236-square-feet or particularly luxurious, but they are new, light-filled, and clean; junior suites can also be an affordable option if you need the extra leg room. There is a small pool, spa, and basic gym with a spectacular view. The biggest plus to City Seasons is its location; perfect for bargain shoppers, business and consular visits, attached to a decent mall, and right next to the metro station. Note: this is a dry hotel, so there is no alcohol in the minibar or at hotel restaurants.

Pros

  • Central location

Cons

  • Small pool
  • No alcohol, on-site restaurants closed during the day during Ramadan

Grand Hyatt Dubai

$$$ | Sheikh Rashid Rd., Umm Hurair, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

As Bur Dubai's largest hotel, with a colossal 600 rooms and almost 200 serviced apartments, this property makes a real statement. The building is designed in two sweeping sensuous curves and is surrounded by 37 acres of beautifully manicured grounds on Dubai Creek. On-site amenities are extensive, including an ample choice of eateries, a nightclub, kids club, cinema, and a large sports club. Big free-form pools sit among tropical gardens. Public areas are on a grand scale, decorated with flourishes and flounces popular in the 1980s. Rooms are spacious with a classic international design, including pale stone, and tan and brown hues. The Grand Hyatt has excellent conference facilities and often holds large conventions.

Pros

  • Wide range of quality activities on-site
  • Excellent pools and gardens

Cons

  • Very large hotel that risks being impersonal
  • Kids' club is a paid activity for five years and over

Meliá Dubai

$$ | Kuwait St., Port Rashid, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Italian-designed (Marco Mangili), Spanish-owned, with an Indian flagship restaurant, sleek and yet in an undeveloped area of Dubai, the Meliá is certainly a hotel of contrasts. There are few five-star hotels in this older part of Dubai, so when Meliá opened in 2011 it was a pleasant surprise. Public areas are dramatic, well sculpted, and sophisticated. The large rooms are plush and contemporary, and have exceptional oval baths. There is a small rooftop pool and bar with skyline views of Dubai's space-age towers, shipyards, and the Persian Gulf. The spa is well worth a visit, offering hydrotherapy, Moroccan bath, and a wide range of treatments.

Palazzo Versace

$$$$ | Culture Village, Bur Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
When they were constructing this hotel, there were plans to chill the sand on the beach overlooking Dubai Creek; although that plan was discarded after an environmental uproar, it's a testament to how luxurious this hotel is. Public areas are as outstanding as one would expect for a Versace property. The rooms are gorgeous, like something straight from a Venetian palace, with parquet flooring and Versace-designed furnishings and prints. There are mosaics, marble, flocked wallpaper, and a 12,900-square-foot Imperial suite. Dining on-site offers some exceptional choices, but you have to hop in a car to get just about anywhere else.

Pros

  • Exceptional luxury with unique furnishings
  • Apartments available in neighboring residential area

Cons

  • Surrounding area is still underdeveloped

Raffles Dubai

$$$$ | Sheikh Rashid Rd., Umm Hurair, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The crowning glory of Wafi City (an ancient Egyptian-inspired mall), this majestic glass pyramid houses a classy five-star hotel. It's a beautiful property—albeit extravagantly opulent. The theme goes overboard only in the huge lobby where Egyptian columns overwhelm the space. The rest of the hotel is more subtle, with contemporary Arabic and Asian design themes that increase in grandeur with the price of the room. Suites are very generously sized, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows leading to wide terraces, many with views of Dubai Creek and the downtown skyline. There's a lovely pool, complete with gold mosaics, and a luxurious spa. The hotel may be older than some of Dubai's five-star properties, but remains incredibly plush, and is frequented by high-profile visitors.

Pros

  • One-of-a-kind style
  • Good restaurants and bars on-site and in connecting Wafi City mall

Cons

  • Tricky access by car
  • Some guests party very hard (and loud)
  • Some may find the design a little tired
