THE BEST HOTEL IN UGANDA

Ishasha Wilderness Camp

$$$$ | Ishasha Sector, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Steeped in classic safari style, this intimate camp will make you feel as if you have stumbled onto the set of Out of Africa. Located on the banks of the Ntungwe River, in the remote southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, rooms are constructed from canvas, net, and wood, reminiscent of old-school safari tents but oozing with luxurious comfort. For those wanting to escape modern life, it's perfect. The sense of being surrounded by wild things is perhaps the greatest pleasure: monkeys play in the trees, elephants ford the river while hippos bathe in the shallows. Wi-Fi may be limited but hot water is plentiful. Sunset gin and tonics by the campfire next to the river and sensational dinners are served on white linen under the stars, so life feels immensely privileged. Don’t miss Agartha’s Taste of Uganda tour: see how millet porridge is made and drink bushera from a calabash at the nearby trading center. All profits from this engaging experience go directly to a women’s cooperative.

Pros

  • Remote wilderness location
  • Sundowners and bush breakfasts can be arranged in special vantage points
  • Full board includes house drinks

Cons

  • Too remote for some tastes
  • Admirable eco-credentials means hair dryers can only be used upon request
  • Although the camp is the best located for seeing tree-climbing lions, sightings can't be guaranteed

Kampala Serena Hotel

$$ | Kintu Rd., Kampala, Uganda
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Towering above sculpted water features and landscaped gardens like a modern-day Moorish palace, the five-star Kampala Serena sets the standard for hotel service in Uganda. Perfect for business travelers (their conference center hosts weddings and large events) and everyone who wants lots of choice: the pillow menu alone has six different options. The 122 rooms include deluxe, royal and presidential suites, and all have a/c as well as common luxury items such as a minibar; tea/coffee-making facilities, satellite TV, high-speed Wi-Fi, extra large safes, and USB charging ports. You can get a blow dry at the salon; a massage at the Maisha Spa and Health Club; a cocktail by Kampala's most beautiful swimming pool; consult a personal trainer at the state-of-the art gym, indulge in sauna, steam and plunge pool; or chow down on a sumptuous spread at one of seven in-house bars and restaurants. Start the evening in style at the Pearl Restaurant & Champagne Bar where the resident pianist plays every night.

Pros

  • International standards with African flair
  • Serene yet central location
  • Extremely professional

Cons

  • Too large and impersonal for some tastes
  • Long lines at security when president visits

Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

If this world-class lodge, part of the respected Lemala group, does not enchant you with its magical mid-river location, it will captivate you with its outstanding service, indulgent spa, and stunning river-edge infinity pool. Raised wooden walkways crisscross the island’s riverine forest, connecting the luxury suites, two of which have private plunge pool. THE BEST HOTEL IN UGANDA

Mihingo Lodge

$$$ | Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

High up on a kopje (rocky outcrop), the cottages at this superb boutique lodge blend seamlessly into the landscape. Early morning thrills come in the form of zebras congregating at the salt lick below the lodge’s rocky ledge pool. Guests in Kings cottage have spotted leopards on the adjacent rock; Klipspringer cottage has its own waterhole; and Tree cottage (as the name suggests) is built around a tree that grows through the hardwood platform. Mihingo’s eco-creds go further than design: the lodge has pioneered a community compensation scheme to help conserve leopard and hyena. If the delectable food isn’t enough to seduce you, the lodge offers romantic nooks aplenty: the sundeck below the rainwater infinity pool; secret sundowner spots; the tower with near 360-degree views. Ride through zebra on horseback or mountain bike, walk with giraffes in the national park, play tennis or take a night game drive, Mihingo has thought of everything. Bushcraft courses and nightly feeding of wild bushbabies on a viewing platform below the bar ensure kids love it.

Pros

  • A true eco-lodge
  • Best for horseback safaris (lodge guests have priority access)
  • Vast array of activities to satisfy young and old

Cons

  • Often overlooked as off the mainstream safari trail
  • The many steps may be a problem for some
  • Holiday weekends can see lodge filled with expats

THE BEST HOTEL IN UGANDA

Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge

$$$$ | Buhoma, Uganda
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

This award-winning eco-lodge has the grandest vantage point of Bwindi in its own reserve of secondary forest, creating a 50-acre gorilla-friendly buffer zone, some of which is a tea plantation. On occasion, guests are lucky enough to observe the Rushegura group of gorillas within the lodge grounds. The ten thatched luxury bandas (named after local gorillas) are the epitome of sophisticated Afrochic. The two deluxe bandas (complete with fireplace, day bed, and heart-stopping forest view) are perfect for honeymooners or those celebrating a special occasion. Each guest is entitled to a complimentary massage, conducted in the charming Humula Forest Spa. Your personal butler (and staff who dance out of the kitchen to serve you dinner) make Bwindi Lodge unforgettable. For more than 25 years, Volcanoes Safaris has been at the forefront of developing and promoting primate tourism in Uganda and Rwanda, and, as one of Uganda's most environmentally committed luxury lodge providers, Volcanoes invests in sustainable community projects through its Partnership Trust. The community-run Bwindi Bar is a must-visit (see Activities); the tea tour and river walk are delightful. For fans of Volcanoes Safaris’ Afrochic in magnificent settings, Mount Gahinga Lodge is a more intimate destination for tracking gorillas (and golden monkeys) and for learning about the Batwa, the original forest-dwelling tribe. Mt Gahinga is the only high-end property that serves the volcanic landscape of the pocket handkerchief-sized Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Pros

  • Extensive veranda and living area look straight into the forest
  • Friendly, well-trained staff with great attention to detail
  • Innovative food menus, superbly prepared

Cons

  • Lots of steps in and out of the lodge
  • Gorilla sightings in lodge grounds can't be guaranteed
  • Communal evening dining may not suit everyone

THE BEST HOTEL IN UGANDA

Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge

$$$$ | Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Clouds has one of the greatest views in Uganda: high on a ridge in Nkuringo, verdant hills tumble away to a valley below, under distant volcanic peaks (that occasionally glow red). At dawn, when mist sits low in the valleys, they really do look like islands in the clouds. Each cottage is crafted, grotto-like, from lumps of igneous rock. Vast picture windows frame the landscape; contemporary Ugandan art adorns the walls; and plump cream couches face onto a two-way hearth, its flames stoked by your personal butler. The massage cottage, library, and curated boutique—and traditional dance performance, on request—serve up plenty of reasons to stay another day, while kids may squeal with delight at chance to find chameleons on the lodge's nature trail. What's more, the lodge is a shining example of community conservation—US$75 of the nightly rate goes to Nkuringo Community Conservation Development Foundation in a partnership with local people, the lodge operator, International Gorilla Conservation Project, and African Wildlife Foundation. So you can feel pampered and worthy.

Pros

  • Starting point to track the Nkuringo family of gorillas is five minutes’ walk from lodge
  • Lodge has own helipad on Top of the World
  • Understated menu delivers exceptional dining

Cons

  • Rates are pricey
  • Not all cottages have the view, so ask for Safari or Rafiki if this is important to you
  • Nights at high altitude can be chilly

The Boma Entebbe

$ | Gowers Rd., Entebbe, Uganda Fodor's Choice

This perennially popular boutique hotel is tucked away on a leafy residential street in Entebbe, a few minutes' drive from the airport. The rooms of this original 1940s home look out onto flower-filled courtyards; the poolside restaurant serves an impressive variety of dishes; the mature gardens are a birding paradise; and the smiling, professional staff are famously eager to help. Decor combines European colonial and African styles: chunky Chesterfield sofas, wicker chairs, and dark-wood furniture populate the public areas; safari lanterns light up pathways at night; netted 4-poster beds dominate bedrooms. The Boma has become such an institution for tourists, business people, and traveling aid workers alike that it pays to book with as much notice as possible.

Pros

  • Professional service at an affordable price
  • Rate includes airport transfers, if required
  • Global environmentalist Jane Goodall has stayed here

Cons

  • Gets booked up quickly
  • Incoming/outgoing guests can make it noisy at night
  • Small swimming pool

Buhoma Lodge

$$$$ | Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Buhoma, Uganda Fodor's Choice

One of only two lodges within Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the chalets at Buhoma Lodge rise up on stilts out of the hillside, ensuring that views from the highest rooms—long, sweeping vistas down the mist-clad valley—are some of the best this side of the forest. Inside, the cream wooden-framed walls offset traditional Congolese masks and colorful kitenge (African print) bathrobes. Some of the en suites feature bathtubs (a welcome treat after a hard day's gorilla tracking). Charcoal braziers are lit every night as waiters serve up delicious four-course dinners in the cozy lounge and open-air dining room. The family / honeymoon chalet has a separate lounge with open fire place. Uganda Exclusive Camps’ have set the bar high: lodge operations strive for minimal environmental impact; guest stays support the Future Generations Trust; the lodge curio shop supports a local women's group. Ask for cottage 2 or 4 to guarantee the panoramas, but be prepared for steps. Those with mobility issues may prefer rooms 3, 10 or 9.

Pros

  • Two-minute walk from the gorilla tracking briefing point
  • Smiling, attentive staff
  • Complimentary use of walking poles, gaiters, metal water bottles, and rucksacks

Cons

  • This popular lodge quickly sells out
  • Admirable eco-credentials means hair dryers can only be used on request

Chameleon Hill

$$$ | Uganda Fodor's Choice

Set on a tiny promontory of land high above Lake Mutanda, to the south of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Chameleon Hill's windmill-like towers and individually color-themed rooms look across to majestic volcanic peaks that wouldn't look amiss in a Disney movie. Hands down, Chameleon Hill wins the prize for Uganda's funkiest lodge, with its creative decor, hand-drawn murals, and the welcoming open fireplace in the Rainbow Lounge. Stylish and modern self-contained chalets and villas include private veranda and spectacular lake view. The vintage Volkswagen Kombi camper van “glamping” option is set in its own private garden. German–South African owner Doris and her super-friendly, animal-loving team will make you feel at home right away. Running low on the complimentary organic toiletries? Murchison River Lodge

$$ | Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda Fodor's Choice

With a philosophy celebrating the simpler things in life, this relaxed mid-range lodge has got the recipe just right—kids love the pool, parents appreciate the babysitting service, homemade meals are served by smiling staff—and life here generally mirrors the slow pace of the river Nile drifting by. Four family cottages are set back overlooking acacia woodland and 13 en suite thatched safari tents dot the bush, but the main restaurant and bar area, lined with comfy couches crafted from salvaged railway sleepers, takes the lion's share of the river view. Despite the allure of the park’s activities, it's tempting to while away days in hammocks, or from the viewing platform, just looking out over the islands of the Nile, watching for passing hippos and elephants.

Pros

  • The evening turndown service adds a thoughtful touch
  • Great value for money
  • Boat trips can start from below lodge restaurant

Cons

An infinity pool overlooks wildlife gathered on the banks of the Kazinga Channel, a health club, massage area, business center, and vast gift shop ensure you need never leave. The manicured lawns and shrubbery may feel too tame for safari aficionados, but the professional staff and central location means Mweya is still the busiest property in the park.

  • Rooms to suit most budgets/styles
  • Great views in every direction

Cons

  • With 46 rooms, 4 tents, and 4 cottages, it can feel big and impersonal

Ndali Lodge

$$$$ | Lake Nyinambuga, Bigodi, Uganda

A Ugandan Downton Abbey, Ndali is a bit of an institution, offering a charming blend of warm hospitality and colonial history (but with the 21st-century convenience of a helipad). If you like the country house style, appreciate fine wines and good company, and cannot imagine taking a walk without several dogs bounding along beside you, then you'll love Aubrey & Clare Price's home (for a home is what it is). Traditionally thatched cottages, built by Aubrey and his father in the heart of his grandfather's 1920s tea estate, enjoy panoramic views: to the west, the Rwenzori Mountains, their glacial peaks occasionally visible on a clear morning; and in the opposite direction, the enchanting Lake Nyinambuga—so pretty that it features on a Ugandan banknote. There's croquet, tennis, and paddleboarding on the crater lake, a swimming pool and sauna, a yoga pagoda, and the best situated gym in Uganda. Guests are welcome to tour the nearby Sadhguru School if their visit coincides with the school year.

Pros

  • The home-away-from-home feel
  • Fantastic walking and biking country
  • In-room massages are available

Cons

  • Tipples are charged separately
  • If dogs aren't your thing, forget it
  • Hair dryers can only be used on request

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge

$$$$ | Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda

This lodge has graduated from humble beginnings to become an award-winning property offering high-end rooming options: suites have floor-to-ceiling views of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest; balconies of Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira cottages overlook the distant Virunga volcanoes. Intricately folded banana palms line the roof; bright cushions and fleece-lined kitenge bathrobes bring warmth and color. Family villas are perfect for families or groups of friends (the steep climb down to your room is good training for the gorilla tracking). Choose from jaw-dropping, floor-to-ceiling views of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (or volcanoes) from the wooden deck that surrounds the spacious Rafiki Lounge at the lodge's highest point. "Make your own cocktail class" with lodge staff at the Mylica Lounge is a fun start to evenings at the lodge. The complimentary hand massage is a clever invitation to services of the Mist Spa. Through its Gorilla Junction Foundation, Nkuringo works to build the skills of local young people.

Pros

  • Choose from garden cottages, family villas, suites, and honeymoon cottage
  • Friendly, excellent service
  • Experts in arranging hikes and trails

Cons

  • Remote gorilla trekking destination
  • The high altitude (7,090 feet/2,161 meters) means it is often chilly at night
  • Lots of concrete steps from main area to most rooms

Primate Lodge Kibale

$$$$ | Kibale National Park, Fort Portal, Uganda

Right behind the park headquarters, Primate Lodge Kibale is the only lodge in the National Park thus convenient for those early mornings when tracking chimps or birding calls for an early alarm. Stone cottages with hardwood floors and hand-carved wooden interiors and en suite tents occupy small forest clearings, making the lodge appealing for birding groups that can spend their time just wandering around the grounds. The thatch of the main building is a work of art, extending across an artfully decorated dining and cozy lounge area with a fireplace. The well-stocked bar serves cocktails. (Drinks are included in the room rate). If you're booked in for chimp habituation (with a reporting time of 6:30 am), you might appreciate the time gained from staying right next to the Park Headquarters. Massage and therapies are available at the Ihama Retreat lodge spa for an extra fee. Good cappuccino arrives promptly at the adjacent Kibale Café, a small vocational center set up by the lodge to train local youth in hospitality. Pass by for an extra caffeine hit before you set off to track the chimps.

Pros

  • Location next to trailhead
  • Impressive refurbishment and beautiful hardwood interiors
  • Secluded honeymoon cottage has bathtub, an extra room and private firepit

Cons

  • Better value can be found elsewhere
  • Surroundings a little noisy when guests congregate for tracking
  • Lodge is in the forest so forest views aren't the best

Protea Hotel Entebbe

$$ | 36–40 Sebugwawo Dr., Entebbe, Uganda

Part of the Marriott chain, Protea Hotel Entebbe offers a convenient base just minutes from the airport. Despite its proximity to the runways, the hotel enjoys a serene lakeside setting with a private stretch of white sand overlooking Lake Victoria. Guests appreciate the tranquility, though the décor in standard rooms feels somewhat uninspired. The hotel’s best feature is its lakeside terrace with panoramic water views—just beware of the occasional evening swarms of (harmless) lake flies. Leisure facilities include a lakefront swimming pool, spa, massage services, and bike rentals. The hotel has 24-hour front desk service and a free airport shuttle (unless it's a big group, in which case US$5 per person). Twin-bedded standard rooms face the airport; deluxe rooms have a double bed, private balcony, and lake view.

Pros

  • Super-convenient for the airport
  • Beautiful beach location
  • International brand

Cons

  • Service can be slow
  • Spa needs renovating
  • Food gets mixed reviews

Turaco Treetops

$$ | Nkingo, Uganda

Turaco Treetops combines nature, good environmental practices, and excellent value for money for the whole family from its jungle site at the edge of Kibale National Park. On a clear day, the Rwenzori Mountains are visible from the restaurant’s upper deck. Luxury en suite cottages at secluded spots in the forest are a perfect hideaway for couples; standard en suites have the (optional) feature of sharing balconies, ideal for groups who want a bigger private space to enjoy nature together. The natural stone swimming pool is big enough for pre-breakfast laps and has a shallow end for kids (and sun loungers for mums!) A kids’ playroom and outdoor playground with mini zipline mean fun is guaranteed for the little ones. Guided nature walks (day or night) and Giant bike hire add to the adventure. The Chris Roberts Forest Foundation (www.crff.earth) was established by Turaco Treetops to partner with local farmers to create sustainable agro-forestry zones that protect and regenerate over 40 acres next to Kibale National Park.

Pros

  • Foundation supports reforestation and conservation
  • Spacious cottages are set well apart
  • Unusually good value for money

Cons

  • Cottages furthest from the main building require a short walk on a gentle slope
  • Wi-Fi and phone network are only available in the main building
  • Books up quickly during peak seasons

Volcanoes Kibale Lodge

$$$$ | Volcanoes Kibale Lodge, Uganda

Volcanoes Safaris’ newest Uganda lodge, set on yet another stunning hilltop, offers panoramic views of the Rwenzori Mountain foothills, the perspective shifting throughout the day. The local community played a key role in its construction—over 400 workers, including female masons, built the lodge by hand. Local carpenters crafted the furniture, and many continue reforesting its 150-acre grounds. With 200,000 indigenous seedlings planted, the more than 150 bird list is set to grow. Camera traps capture serval cats and side-striped jackals. Bandas feature indoor and outdoor showers; fireplaces glow in bedroom and living areas. Rwenzori Foundry statues enhance the décor, while bold kitenge bathroom wraps add to the Afrochic vibe. The kitchen garden serves up creative menus; the coffee served is hand-harvested by the Kyambura Women’s Cooperative, a Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust (VSPT) project; menus are inspired by local dishes such as “filinda,” a bean soup that is traditionally served at weddings. The summit view, guided nature walk around the crater lake, complimentary massage and sauna whet the appetite for nibbles and cocktails by the pool. Monochrome family photos and a well-curated library on East Africa reflect the lodge owner's deep roots in the region. Fireside chats at the lodge with primatologists from the Kibale Chimpanzee Project can be arranged after you have tracked the chimps in Kibale Forest. A visit to nearby Sadhguru School (the only one in Africa) can also be arranged. VSPT is an active supporter of the Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots educational program.

Pros

  • Very private
  • Communal dining ensures there's always someone to swap travel stories with
  • Volcanoes prides itself on recruiting and promoting local staff, particularly young women

Cons

  • Uphill walk from parking to rooms and main building
  • Expansive living areas may feel too roomy
  • Exposed hilltop can be a little breezy
