THE BEST HOTEL IN UGANDA

Mihingo Lodge

$$$ | Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

High up on a kopje (rocky outcrop), the cottages at this superb boutique lodge blend seamlessly into the landscape. Early morning thrills come in the form of zebras congregating at the salt lick below the lodge’s rocky ledge pool. Guests in Kings cottage have spotted leopards on the adjacent rock; Klipspringer cottage has its own waterhole; and Tree cottage (as the name suggests) is built around a tree that grows through the hardwood platform. Mihingo’s eco-creds go further than design: the lodge has pioneered a community compensation scheme to help conserve leopard and hyena. If the delectable food isn’t enough to seduce you, the lodge offers romantic nooks aplenty: the sundeck below the rainwater infinity pool; secret sundowner spots; the tower with near 360-degree views. Ride through zebra on horseback or mountain bike, walk with giraffes in the national park, play tennis or take a night game drive, Mihingo has thought of everything. Bushcraft courses and nightly feeding of wild bushbabies on a viewing platform below the bar ensure kids love it.

Pros

  • A true eco-lodge
  • Best for horseback safaris (lodge guests have priority access)
  • Vast array of activities to satisfy young and old

Cons

  • Often overlooked as off the mainstream safari trail
  • The many steps may be a problem for some
  • Holiday weekends can see lodge filled with expats

Chameleon Hill

$$$ | Uganda Fodor's Choice

Set on a tiny promontory of land high above Lake Mutanda, to the south of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Chameleon Hill's windmill-like towers and individually color-themed rooms look across to majestic volcanic peaks that wouldn't look amiss in a Disney movie. Hands down, Chameleon Hill wins the prize for Uganda's funkiest lodge, with its creative decor, hand-drawn murals, and the welcoming open fireplace in the Rainbow Lounge. Stylish and modern self-contained chalets and villas include private veranda and spectacular lake view. The vintage Volkswagen Kombi camper van “glamping” option is set in its own private garden. German–South African owner Doris and her super-friendly, animal-loving team will make you feel at home right away. Running low on the complimentary organic toiletries? Your personal butler is on call and the lodge's African spa offers massage, pedicures and manicures. Lovers of yoga and meditation will adore the dedicated Yogahaus.

Pros

  • Unique setting with unforgettable view
  • Food from organic garden is excellent and plentiful
  • Actively engaged in reforestation and preserving "pocket forests"

Cons

  • 45-minute drive to starting point for gorilla tracking
  • Remote location means public transport access can be difficult
  • Perhaps not for you if you're allergic to dogs (or chickens or cows)
