7 Best Hotels in Cape Town, South Africa

Background Illustration for Hotels

Finding lodging in Cape Town can be a nightmare during peak travel season (December–January), as many of the more reasonable accommodations are booked up. It's worth traveling between April and August, if you can, to take advantage of the "secret season" discounts that are sometimes half the high-season rate. Other reduced rates can be scored by booking directly online, checking the "Best Available Rate" at large hotels, or simply asking if any specials or discounts are available. If you arrive in Cape Town without a reservation, head for any branch of the Tourism Office, which has a helpful accommodations desk.

First-time, short-term, or business visitors will want to locate themselves centrally. The historic city center is a vibrant and pedestrian-friendly place by day, but at night can feel a bit deserted and edgy, depending on where you are. Night owls may prefer to stay amid the nonstop action of Long Street or Kloof Street, or at the V&A Waterfront, with its plethora of pedestrian-friendly shopping and dining options (though be aware that locals don’t consider the Waterfront the "real" Cape Town). Boutique hotels and bed-and-breakfasts in Gardens are often within walking distance of attractions and dining but will be quieter and often enjoy lovely views. Options along the Atlantic Seaboard are also close to the action and (mostly) pedestrian-friendly, with the added advantage of sea and sunset views. Staying farther out on the Cape Peninsula, whether the False Bay or Atlantic side, provides the closest thing in Cape Town to a beach-vacation atmosphere despite the cold ocean waters. The Southern Suburbs, especially around Constantia or Tokai, can make a good base from which to explore the area’s wine estates as well as the peninsula, but you'll be dependent on a car for everything, and should plan on 25 to 45 minutes to get into town.

Most international flights arrive in the morning, and return flights depart in the evening. Because most hotels have an 11 am checkout and 2 pm check-in, you may find yourself with a lodging gap on travel days. All hotels will hold your luggage, and most will try to accommodate you (some of the larger hotels have lounges where you can spend the hours before your flight), but in peak season you may need to organize a backup plan. Also note that many small, luxury accommodations either do not permit children or have minimum-age restrictions. It's a good idea to inquire in advance if this will be an issue. Cape Town also follows the global trend of not smoking in public places. All hotels will have no-smoking rooms, and most are entirely smoke-free.

Cactusberry Lodge

$$ | 30 Breda St., Cape Town, 8001, South Africa

This great-value guesthouse in an appealing shade of cinnamon terra cotta (aka cactusberry) is in a quiet neighborhood that is still within walking distance of many attractions and restaurants. The owner provides attentive service to a maximum of 14 guests and will even assemble personalized tours on request. This is a Victorian-era former private home, so some of the rooms may feel a bit small, but they are stylishly kitted out, and very comfortable for the price. A common lounge upstairs has a TV, honor bar, and DVDs and books for your use, as well as a lovely sundeck with a mountain view. All beds are extra long, and rooms upstairs have ceiling fans and air-conditioning, whereas downstairs there are fans only. Room 5 is the largest and has its own private deck.

  • Personalized concierge service from the owner
  • Homey, friendly place to meet other travelers
  • Great breakfast

La Splendida Hotel

$$ | 121 Beach Rd., Cape Town, 8005, South Africa

This good-value chic hotel enjoys a great location between the popular seafront promenade and Green Point park, and is also just a 15-minute walk from the V&A Waterfront. Ask for a sea- or mountain-facing room, either of which will have great views; the side-view rooms face the neighboring building but are quiet. The comfortable, well-proportioned, and cleanly designed rooms are bright and airy—mostly white with playful splashes of primary colors and a bit of a vintage-retro feel—and the downstairs restaurant Sotano serves tasty Mediterranean food and cocktails- perfect for sunset viewing on the busy promenade.

Romney Park Hotel & Spa

$$ | Romney Rd., Cape Town, 8005, South Africa

In upper Green Point, this converted apartment block incorporates adjoining houses to provide luxury sea-facing suites, all with generous balconies and fully-fitted kitchens. Decorated in an African-colonial style, what this property lacks in gardens and outdoor space it makes up for in generously apportioned spaces and partial sea views. Breakfast is included in the rates, but with self-catering facilities in suites, you might prefer to fix your own and enjoy it while watching the sea from your balcony. Or head down to Somerset Road on foot for a host of deli-dining options. The adjoining spa is well known for good, reasonably priced treatments.

Mandela Rhodes Place

$$ | Wale and St. George's Sts., Cape Town, 8001, South Africa

Occupying an entire city block in the heart of Cape Town, this mixed-use complex consists of apartments, offices, retail space, and a Three Cities hotel comprised of several buildings. The Tower is the most contemporary and spacious with two-bedroom apartments, while the Fairbairn has an art-deco bent, and the Kendall benefits from wood flooring and inlaid stone work. An excellent location from which to explore by day, the area can feel eerily quiet at night. Doppio Zero on the ground floor is the complex's Italian family-dining franchise. For views of Table Mountain and the Harbor, book as high in the Tower as possible. Rooms in the Winery tend to be noisier, as the reception area is directly beneath.

Pros

  • Self-catering and laundry facilities make this a good value for families
  • Convenient location

Cons

  • Slow and costly Wi-Fi
  • Feels like a business hotel

The Three

$$ | 3 Flower St., Cape Town, 8001, South Africa

On a quiet street in leafy Oranjezicht, this midsize boutique hotel has spacious, contemporary rooms laid out on two floors around a lovely courtyard in a beautifully restored old building. Amenities include high-quality linens and robes, great bath products (a designer biodegradable line), free off-street parking, and a local mobile phone for your use. Public spaces are somewhat limited, with the breakfast room–cum-bar on the small side, but there is a nice if small pool and outdoor area with an exercise bike and elliptical machine tucked in a corner. The best public feature is probably the roof deck area with stunning views of Table Mountain and the city, though in summer the wind may keep you downstairs.

Pros

  • Good eco principles in place
  • Private shuttle service that costs the same as a local taxi but lets you know the driver
  • Friendly, helpful staff

Cons

  • Nespresso coffee in room not free
  • No real views from rooms and they also lack outward-facing windows that can open, so if you want fresh air, you are somewhat exposed to passersby in courtyard
