This intimate and quiet setting in Kimihurura, one of the Kigali neighborhoods most known for restaurants and nightlife, is a welcome reprieve. With a French and Belgian focus, Poivre Noir masterfully crafts some of Kigali's best meals. Though their menu changes quarterly, think salmon ceviche marinated in orange and tamarind and a mushroom crumble drizzled with white truffle oil to start, and their famous burger and selection of steaks as a main. For dessert, don't miss the tart vanilla panna cotta with crunchy meringue and strawberries. Guests are served on a covered outdoor patio, and lit candles, light wooden furniture, and mood lighting provide an excellent ambience for delicious food.

Founded by American couple Alissa and Josh Ruxin, this oasis of gourmet cuisine is a perennial favorite among foreign residents and affluent Rwandans for weekend brunch, evening cocktails, and special-occasion dinners with an international menu that ranges from Chinese stir-fry to pumpkin risotto to goat brochettes (a Rwandan staple). The wooden terrace with thatched-roof and recessed lighting affords spectacular hillside views, while art from the adjoining gallery bedecks the brick walls. Herbs and greens are grown on-site and organic produce is used where possible. Local favorites are given a decidedly foodie twist, such as the urwagwa sour cocktail, which pairs regional banana beer with citron and lemongrass. Check out their weekend brunch on Saturday and Sunday, when pancakes, omelets, and fresh juice abounds.

Kigali's fickle social scene finally found a staple in this hilltop African fusion restaurant that has been in business for more than decade, a true feat in this city. Americans, Europeans, and Kigali's elite flock to the brother-and-sister-run Republika Lounge for happy hour, late-night drinks, and a belt-loosening tapas spread. Sample your way through Rwanda and East African cuisine and don't miss the cassava leaf sombe, fried plantains imported from Burundi, curried coconut fish, and the eatery's famed liboké (a steamed chicken dish), all of which come served in glazed earthenware pottery. More traditional eaters won't be disappointed with the garlic fries or the steak and mashed potatoes. Sculpted tree trunks inside and sweeping city views outside make it feel as though you're dining in an opulent tree house.

This intimate home-based restaurant feels like an elegant outdoor dinner party. The six-course prix-fixe menu features fusion fare, such as porcini mushroom soup with truffle oil, filet mignon with pancetta brown sauce, and lavender flower sorbet. Le Cordon Blue–trained chef Carlos Caula sources nearly all ingredients locally, and everything from the pasta to the pastry crust is made in-house. Guests are served on the chef's spacious flagstone-and-tile patio with sweeping city views. Lit candles, light strands, wicker-and-wood-furniture, and sparing decor exude an earthy elegance and keep the focus on the food. Dinner is served promptly at 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday. The weekday lunch offers a wallet-friendly selection of artisan sandwiches, soups, and salads. Scout out the menu online and call ahead with any special dietary preferences. The wine selection is limited, so bring your own libation for a corkage fee of Rwf 5,000 (US$7).
