Fodor's Expert Review Hôtel des Iles

Essaouira, Marrakesh-Safi, Morocco

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

It's a 1950s concrete jungle, but Hôtel des Iles does have a smallish pool (although you may end up sharing it with the seagulls who use it as a bathtub) and is conveniently near both the beach and the medina. The bungalows with private terraces overlooking the pool have a better view than rooms overlooking the sea, since you have to first look past the uninspiring parking lot full of tour buses. Orson Welles spent eight months at Hôtel des Iles while filming his award-winning Othello in 1949.

PROS

  • Clean and comfortable. Pool

CONS

  • Full of tour groups, overpriced, undergoing renovation
