L'Iglesia

$$ | Eglise Espagnole, El Jadida, Morocco Fodor's Choice

One of Morocco’s most stylish hotels is partly built within the walls of the old Spanish church, St. Anthony of Padua, in the heart of the centuries-old Cité Portugaise. Set over two sites (the church and convent, and the former American Consulate), the rooms here are quirky yet comfortable, with original features maintained for a truly ethereal feel. The old bell was taken from the tower (which you can still climb) and installed in the entrance hall, while the altar area has been transformed into a sublime salon where you can sit and drink, read, or just gaze in wonder at what may be the country’s most impressive collection of Art Deco objects.

Pros

  • Unique interiors
  • Gorgeous building
  • Historical setting

Cons

  • If you stay in the converted church, breakfast is in a different building
  • Expensive for the area
  • Few other restaurant options in the area

This delightful guesthouse at the river’s edge effortlessly mixes charm and chic. On arrival, you’ll be forgiven for feeling you’ve walked into a contemporary art gallery because L'Oum Errabia doubles as one—and many of the displayed works by local and international artists are for sale. Paintings aside, there’s a plethora of Art Deco furniture plus some lovely local touches; guest room walls are covered in earthy tadelakt and hand basins are lined with pretty mosaics. Riad Kalaa

$$ | 3–5, rue Zebdi, Rabat, Morocco

A gorgeous interior courtyard with a relaxing terrace and a small plunge pool, plus views of Rabat’s rooftops help make this 17th-century medina house one of the most beautiful riads in town. The opulent accommodations—complete with tadelakt walls, swaths of rich fabrics, and splendid wrought-iron accents—are full of Moroccan character but the end result is a clever balance, blending Moorish-Arabesque style with all that is clean, light, and unsmothering. If this riad is full, there are five others within this group to choose from.
