Fodor's Expert Review Lixus BC
You may have heard of Volubilis, Morocco's most famous Roman ruins in Meknès, but on the Loukkos River, Lixus BC is a lesser-known but still interesting site just 45 minutes away from Tangier. Only a small proportion of the site has been excavated, but the main attractions are an amphitheater, a column-lined road, a mosaic of a sea-god (half man, half crab), and the religious center of the town, high on the hill, which retains the foundations for the places of worship of each civilization to have settled there. The hill held great importance to a series of seafaring civilizations, starting with the Phoenicians in the 7th century until the time of the Arabs. The guides at the entrance are official and informative. They are paid by the government to do their job, but appreciate a tip.
