Fodor's Expert Review Riad Laaroussa
3, Derb Bechara, Fez, Fès-Boulemane, Morocco Fodor's Choice
Built around a lush courtyard garden—a tranquil oasis from the medina’s mayhem right on the doorstep—this 17th-century palace had fallen into disrepair before being rescued and rebuilt by its French-American owners, utilizing the skills of the city’s finest craftsmen. Now archways, columns, intricate woodwork, and dazzling zellij tiles combine to create a stunning property, with palatial rooms and suites, a lovely swimming pool, and lots of lounging space. Breakfast is served on the spacious roof terrace, and they serve a Moroccan prix-fixe menu on request. The friendly chefs will let you watch them prepare dishes in the large kitchen, and even accompany them to the market. The four bedrooms of the adjoining La Maison Laaroussa can also be booked for exclusive use for up to eight guests. There's a wonderfully authentic hammam on-site, too.
